The INDEPENDENT, March 15, 2000 P a g a li McGlasson is offered extension Banks School Board adopt ed three measures at Monday night’s meeting which will help guide the district tor the next several years. Superintendent Marilyn Mc- Glasson’s contract will be ex tended for the next three years. Her work over the last two years has helped to get the dis trict on the road to fiscal health, including obtaining a loan from the state allowing the district to continue to operate. Appropriately, the board also adopted a set of Budget Guiding Principles, 2000-2004. The district is under a four-year debt repayment program, which is the primary budget consideration. However, the board saw fit to outline priori ties in the areas of finance, fa cilities, curriculum, activities/ athletics and technology. The guiding principles are intended to provide a framework for fu ture appropriations and are subject to annual review and possible change. A budget meeting is sched uled for Monday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m., in the Banks High School Library. The board also adopted a revised set of graduation re quirements. The class of 2003 will be required to complete three math credits (up from two), allowing graduating stu dents the opportunity to com plete basic algebra and geom etry instruction. A total of 24 credits will be required for graduation, with four in language arts, three in Elementary School as part of the Reading is Fundamental celebration of stories by Dr. Seuss. Deeth’s striped sweater was a fine sartorial addition to the striped hat from Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat. math, two in science, eight in electives and one each in U.S. history, global studies, govern- ment/economics, senior civics, health education, physical edu cation and applied arts/fine arts/foreign language. Sixth grade teacher Rob Frank gave a presentation on technology in the elementary classroom. Half of the students in an average class can use these devices while the other half is actually in the computer lab, allowing more students to practice word processing and other computer skills simulta neously. The district currently has 30 DreamWriters. 1 I I I I I J The Banks Planning Com mission, at its regular meeting Feb. 29, elected new officers. Brian Biehl was elected chair person and Kirk Andrews will fulfill the role of vice-chairper son. Former chairperson Jack Li- etl resigned at the Nov. 1999 meeting after fulfilling a three- year term on the commission. Remaining members of the commission are Katie Mur doch, Richard Bowden, Jerry Adamowicz (new member) and lone Pilate (non-voting mem ber). The commission still needs to fill one non-voting member position. Interested persons should contact City Hall at 324- 5112.
