Feb. 19 - Dwayne Dean Deth- lefs, 41, Forest Grove, arrested in Vernonia on Washington and Yam hill County warrants; also cited for VBR and m isdemeanor DWS. Feb 22 - Logging equipment and chain saws were taken from a logging site off Tunnel Road. Long distance companies headed Oregon’s list of Top Ten Consumer Complaints for 1999. Problems relating to the Internet were the ninth most frequently reported consumer problem. Attorney General Hardy Meyers unveiled the list in Eu gene, at the Department of Justice’s sixth annual Scam Jam consumer protection con ference. “We focused Scam Jam 2000 on the Internet this year because this technology is rapidly overtaking television as the communication and in formation appliance for many consumers,” Meyers said. “Law enforcement and consumers both need to be better educat ed about the benefits and the risks of the Internet.” The Department of Justice received a total of 9,511 written complaints in 1999 and more than 61,000 telephone in quiries. In addition, approxi mately 10,000 users visited the consumer protection pages of the Department’s website at http://www.doi.state.or.us. To file a complaint, call the Attorney General’s toll-free consumer hotline at 1-877-877- 9392 or 229-5576 in Portland, or write Financial Fraud/Con- sumer Protection, 1162 Court Street N.E., Salem, OR 97310.
