Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, January 19, 2000 ORVAL O. BISHOP Orval Ortan Bishop, 73, Vernonia, died January 13, 2000, at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. A memorial service was held Jan. 16 at the Vernonia Senior Citizens Center, with Pastor Bill Bobbitt of the Jeho- vah’s Witness Kingdom Hall, officiat ing. Interment was at Vernonia Memor ial Cemetery. Mr. Bishop was born June 30, 1926, in Ellsworth, Wise., to Arthur and Mary (Betterly) Bishop. He was raised and educated in St. Paul, Minn. He Drummer Obo Addy will perform at Pacific with his band, Okropong P ortland’s own international m a ste r drum m er, com pose r and bandleader, Obo Addy, will take the stage at Pacific Uni versity on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in a special event in the 1999-2000 Performing Arts Series. The drum m er will be joined for this special perform ance by his band, Okropong. The concert will take place in the Taylor-M eade Performing Arts C enter on campus. O bo A ddy cam e from Ghana, W est Africa, as the son of a W onche medicine man. He is known for celebrating past traditions while at the same tim e em bracing new ideas and foreign influences. His concert features hand and stick drums, talking drums, bells and shak ers, as well as colorful dancers that seem to engage in a “con versation” with the drum m ers and the audience. He married Frances Merriman in 1979 in Vernonia, where they made their home. Mr. Bishop was a mechanic, he owned and operated the service sta tion at Staley's Junction, then the Rocket Station in Manning. He later worked for Olympic Forest Products at Mist. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Vernonia. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, seven sons, Art and Hardsell of Willamina: Roger of Hillsboro: Steven Merriman of Cornelius; Michael Meyer of Beaver ton: David Meyer of Kelso, Wash.; Gary of Salem; four daughters, Mary Rustan of St. Paul, Minn.; Shirley Con- nely of Birkenfeld; Shelby Chance of St. Helens, and Anna Cole of Vernonia; two sisters, llene Morehouse of Port land and Jewell Holburg of Oregon City; a brother, Hardsel of Vancouver, Wash.; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. REICHOW Robert Allen “Bobby" Reichow, 23, Gales Creek, died January 8, 2000, of injuries suffered in an automobile acci dent. A funeral service was held Jan. 13 at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with Pastor Rich LaMar, of the Gales Creek Church of God, officiating. Interment was in Gales Creek Cemetery. The Performing Arts Series is co-sponsored by Tuality Healthcare and Bank of the West. Mr. Reichow was bom August 9, 1976, in Hillsboro, to Vincent A. and Deborah (Taylor) Reichow. He was raised in Banks and attended Banks High School. In 1998 he married Toni DeRoo in Orient, and they made their home in Gales Creek. Mr. Reichow worked with his father as a carpenter and on a com mercial fishing vessel in Alaska.
