Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, April 21, 1999 S p rin g co n ce rt, dram a set at VHS Vernonia High School and W ashington Grade School jun ior high students will perform their annual Spring Concert on Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the VHS gym. The com m unity is invited to enjoy the perform ance by these young musicians. There is no charge for admission. The VHS drama com pany will perform “a simplified ver sion” of Romeo and Juliet, April 29 and 30 at 7 :0 0 .p.m. and May 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the high school gym. Seating is limited and tickets for the drama must be pur chased in advance. They will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Cost is $5.00 for anyone age 12 or older, $3.00 for children age 11 and under. Call drama teacher Jennifer Calvert at 429-3521 to arrange ticket purchases. V ernonia’s home baseball season opened with a 9-6 loss to Knappa. W alters started Vernonia’s Loggers off with a single to ning ended two batters later, Knappa had pulled even, 6-6. Vernonia ended the top of the seventh after three batters. Aultman struck out the first, the second thrown out at first base, and P arker’s third catch in cen ter field. Vernonia scored six runs on 11 hits, two walks and three Knappa errors. Vernonia pitch ers B enedict, Johnson and Aultman faced 37 batters and gave up four hits, nine walks and struck out eight. The Loggers host Corbett April 23 and W arrenton April 30, both double headers begin ning at 3:30 p.m. center field, advanced to third, on Justin Jo h n s o n ’s single, then stole home when Knap pa’s catcher threw down on Johnson as he stole second. Johnson stole third and Pat tison, w ho’d been given a free pass to first, stole second. Benedict singled to load the bases and Bellingham tallied the first RBI.
