Sunnyside Cafe & Deli reopens with new owners and old name Steve and Tammy Roberts grew up about 50 miles from each other—she was in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, he was in Deer Park, Washington—but didn’t meet until 1985, when they were both enrolled in the cook ing school at Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria. Now, 13 years later—and about 18 months after moving to Vernonia—they have their own restaurant. The Roberts’ purchased the Treharne Cafe & Deli, two miles south of Ver nonia, from Gerrie Reynolds. They have also changed the name back to Sunnyside Cafe & Deli, as it was called when operated by Judy Budge. Seminar on drugs in the workplace A free seminar, “Substance Abuse in the Workplace,” will be presented Aug. 26 in St. He lens by the Oregon Employ ment Department and Manage ment & Training Corp. Topics included in the pro gram include identifying drug and alcohol problems in the workplace, management re sponsibilities and legal limita tions, procedures for encourag ing employee change, how to document potential problems, and more. The speaker will be Jerry Gjesvold, from Serenity Lane, who has been a consultant and trainer for public and private companies since 1983. z The seminar will be present ed at the Employment Depart ment office, 500 N. Hwy. 30, Suite 320, St. Helens. It is sponsored by the Oregon Busi ness Employee Assistance Program and is funded by the State Office of Alcohol and Drugs. Seating is limited. C ontest fo r Oregon amateur photographers If you have a photo that you think should be on the cover of the 1999-2000 Oregon Blue Book, now is the time to submit it for consideration. The con test, open to all amateur pho tographers who are Oregon residents, is held every two years. The Oregon Blue Book is 450 pages of facts, figures and details about the state, includ ing history, government, cities and counties, elected officials, education, cultural resources and more. Photographs must be of scenic Oregon locations, four inches wide by six inches high. The winner of the contest will be featured on the inside front cover of the book; there is no fi nancial compensation. Entries must be postmarked by Monday, November 2,1998. They are familiar not only with restaurant work, but with this particular restaurant be cause Tammy had been work ing there for Gerrie. Some changes are taking place both inside and outside the restaurant. Steve is build ing new service counters and doing some decorative work in side. They also plan to add to the menu with a six-foot salad bar and a children’s menu. Outside, a new entrance will be built near the southwest cor ner of the building, and the area that held gasoline pumps many years ago will be remod eled into an outdoor eating area. At this time, the Roberts’ are working long hours, with only one employee, but feel they can handle it while they are busy making changes. You can catch them at Sunnyside Cafe & Deli starting at 5:30 a.m. weekdays and 6:00 a.m. on weekends. In addition to the regular food service, they offer take out food and deli trays. Walking tour of St. Helens Olde Town The St. Helens-Scappoose Chamber of Commerce, in co operation with the Shoestring Community Players and stu dents from St. Helens High School drama and history classes, will conduct the first Olde Towne Historical Walking Tour. The tour will begin in the Co lumbia County Courthouse Plaza adjacent to the Columbia County Historical Museum, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 29. Approximately 1-1/2 hours in length, the tour is a theatrical production which leads visitors through the Nationally Regis tered Historic District of Olde Towne St. Helens. Historical characters will lead the tour, including Henry Knighton, the city’s founder, and Amy George. There will be a brief re-enactment of the trial that resulted in the only hang ing in St. Helens’ history. There is no admission charge but donations will be gladly accepted. Oregon, Washington Parks seek campground hosts Oregon and Washington state parks are recruiting park hosts for this fall and the com ing year, with opportunities available in all areas of both states, according to volunteer coordinators. There are openings at all Oregon state park camp rounds this fall through sum mer 1999, according to Linda Lopez, volunteer coordinator for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Host duties are similar in both states. Park hosts greet visitors with information and maps, perform minor mainte nance projects, conduct nature walks or slide shows, pick up litter and inform park staff of potential emergencies or prob lems. In return, hosts receive Food handler class scheduled in Vernonia Columbia County Sanitarian Mark Edington will hold a food handlers’ class at 4:00 p.m. Fri day, August 28, at Sunnyside Cafe & Deli, located at 58360 S. Nehalem Highway, Vernonia. Prior to taking a test, partici pants will study a booklet, watch a film and may ask Ed ington questions. Those who successfully pass the food handler test will receive a food handler’s permit. Costs are $10 for the test and $2 for the book let. Questions may be directed to Columbia County Public Health, 366-3828. Preregistra tion is not required. Those at tending should bring a pen or pencil to complete the test. -tv. Fund raiser set for M-B project Volunteers are needed for a booth at Birkenfeld Community Church during the Hood-to- Coast Run, Aug. 21-23, as a fund raiser for the Mist-Birken- feld Community Center. County accepts gift of p ro p erty in M ist The donation of a lot to Co lumbia County, will be added to adjacent county-owned proper ty and become a day-use rest area in Mist. The property, which is locat ed across Hwy. 47 from the Mist Store, was donated to the county by Leland Lane, of Hampton, Iowa, and includes an abandoned home which was once owned and occupied by Lane’s parents. According to Chuck Ash croft, director of county parks, plans for the rest area will in clude a picnic shelter made in corporating some of the cedar siding from the old home.
