The INDEPENDENT, May 6, 1998 Logger pitchers gain confidence, team “O ur advantage is com ing up ,” said Logger B aseball Coach Grant Rand, on April 22nd. “ I believe we have the strongest and deepest pitching staff in the league.” He was looking ahead to doubleheaders with Portland Lutheran, Corbett, Knappa and N eah-K ah-N ie....and he was right. Vernonia split a doublehead er with Knappa’s Loggers May 1, in Knappa. The first game went to Knappa 6-3. Game two was halted by lightning in the fifth and w ent to V ernonia 11-10. Randy Rand hit a home run in the second inning of game two to put Vernonia up by a pair. Knappa had a big third in ning, taking the lead 6-5. VHS answ ered w ith a fifth-inning surge. George Van- dehey’s two run hom er and Josh Luttrell’s two RBI double gave Vernonia a four-run lead. Knappa scored three in the bottom of the fifth, not enough to take back the lead. The Loggers split a double- header with Corbett April 28, in Vernonia. Vernonia took a six run lead into the top of the sixth in game one but, by the end of the sixth, Corbett had an 8-6 lead. ____ ________________________ -... Game two ended in Vernon ia’s favor, 3-2. Corbett scored in the first and third innings and the Log gers answ ered im m ediately both times. In the fifth Chad DeW itt dou bled, was advanced to third by Luttrell and singled home by Justin Johnson for what would be the winning score.
