The INDEPENDENT, January 21, 1998 Page 7 _________________ .. By Larry Doppke Two light taps of the gavel by President Eric Olson brought the first 1998 meeting of the Senior Center Board of Directors to order. We have some good news and some bad news. Let’s start off with the bad news first. The need to raise lunch prices has been talked about time and again, but now it is a necessity. In February lunches will go from $1.50 to $2.00. I will address this subject in greater detail in a Letter to the Editor in this is sue, please read it. We promise to make changes at the Center and here are just two: Now you may play games any time during the day up to 3:00 p.m. Two sign-up sheets will be provided for trips when planned. One for the Senior members and one for those who wish to fill in should there be a vacancy. More changes will appear in the next article. The Seniors would like to thank everyone who helped us have a successful bazaar sale. Profits from the sale subsidize the Senior Center’s noon lunch program. A Vernonia resident, Vivian Cosnett, won the cro cheted tablecloth in our raffle. Winners of the Colco Trans portation raffle were Barbara Bergerson, Etta Russell, and Rebecahanna Peerson. And I often use the computer because of the swift writing deliv ery. But I also use another form of journalizing. This has color, texture and, often, paths in many directions at once. It is journal izing with art. Any medium can be used and, like a journal, it is personal and not for presentation. Technique can be developed but well-developed technique is not needed. Someone who has never painted can use a paintbrush and paint to journalize quite well. The Vernonia Hands On Art Center will be starting a class the first week of February for Art Journalizing. All mediums will be available, but some will be suggested. The class will offer the opportunity to engage Art Journalizing on a weekly basis. The concomitance of journalizing will be the focus. Art Journalizing classes will be Wednesday evenings, from 6:30-8:30, open-house style. Drop in to participate when it is con venient for you. There is no fee, however donations to VHOAC are always welcome. Optional supplies will be available for pur chase (journal books, personal take-home supplies.). Feel free to call me with any questions or suggestions. If you want to take the class, but find the time conflicts with your schedule, let me know. Many of you have expressed a desire to support the Art Center. Strongly consider attending the annual, Vernonia Hands On Art Center Summit, to be held Saturday, Feb. 21,8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All community members are invited. Come and help make a difference in the upcoming year and direction for the Art Center. There will be reports on the center’s history and current status, recognition and appreciation of support, and the hands-on work of specific objectives. The Summit will be held at the Grange. The Art Center continues to offer free after school art classes, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00-5:00 p.m. for students ages 6-17. In January the PTA and the Art Center are partnering in the PTA “REFLECTIONS” art contest. Mondays and Fridays will be dedicated to working on these projects. All students are welcome to participate. The theme for artistic interpretation is "Wouldn’t it be Great if...” The art areas are Visual Arts, Literature, Music, Photography. Age/grade divisions are Primary/ preschool-2; lntermediate/3-5; Middle-Junior/6-8; Senior/9-12. Wednesdays at the Art Center will be a change of mediums; pot tery will be the focus. All classes are held at the Vernonia Grange Hall, 375 North Street. All questions may be directed to me at 429-4014, PO Box 295, Vernonia 97064.
