Banks High School varsity volleyball team faced Astoria Sept. 25, pleasing the home crowd with a 15-4, 15-13 win. Banks had a 1OO-percent serv er in Anita Orlowski, who also _ _ __ i . scored 10 points. Rebecca Station also had a perfect match, hitting five of five. Banks hosted Rainier on Sept. 23 and lost 12-15, 4-15, in spite of Carrie Bayless’ 100- Braves get better with hard work Banks High School varsity football team hosted Rainier Sept. 26, and were defeated 21-6. “The kids did a good job, but didn’t get points on the board to show for it,” said head coach Steve Luby. Leland Schmidlin rushed for 155 of the team’s 259 total yards in the game. “The team has a lot of heart and a lot of courage," said coach Luby. “Our goal is to keep getting better as a unit. If they keep it up we’ll turn this around.” The Braves travelled to Tillamook Sept. 19, and even though they played hard, they suffered a loss, 54-6. The team travelled to a tournament Sept. 20 at North Marion, along with 11 other schools. Banks finished first in their pool, defeating Willamina and North Marion, two games each, and splitting their match with Taft. Ranked second overall at the end of pool play, Banks re ceived a bye in the first round of championship play. In the second round they defeated St. Helens, then moved on to the championship match, which ended in a loss to Wald port. “Kendra Robinson stepped up and had a real solid tour ney,” said head coach Richard Warren, “with seven blocks and five kills for the weekend." On Sept. 18, the team won three games at St. Helens, 12-15, 17-15, 15-8. Highlights of Banks’ tight team play were Dasha Wake field, shining with eight kills, and high-point servers Orlows ki, who blasted three aces for 13 points, and Robinson, tally ing an ace and five points. On the road in Scappoose Sept. 16, the team was defeat ed 4-15, 2-15. The girls took home stats to be proud of, though, both as a team and in dividually. As a team, Banks kept their serving percentage high, at 87, and boasted passing and hitting percentages of 78.5 and 78, respectively.
