Pacific University schedules an interesting blend for 1997-98 Performing Arts Series P o o tiir in n o Featuring a mix of fiery in strumentals, airy ballads, powerful a cap pel la voices and light-hearted comedy, Pacific University’s 1997-98 Performing Arts Series will bring a wide variety of musi cal genres to Forest Grove beginning in September. This year’s line-up in cludes world renowned artists Riders in the Sky, Jon Naka matsu, Solas, Street Sounds, and Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel. The series opens Satur day, September 20, as the three cowboys of Riders in the Sky turn out silvery tunes with comical style. Then Jon Nakamatsu, gold medal win ner of the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competi tion takes the stage on Thurs day, October 16. Next, Solas comes to town on Friday, November 7, bring ing traditional Celtic music with a contemporary, urban flair. Then it’s African chants mixed with rhythm and blues as Street Sounds delivers on Saturday, February 28,1998. Rounding out the series on Sunday, April 4, 1998, will be Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel, a duo with a reputa tion for serene instrumental sounds and acoustic excel lence. Special events this year in clude an old-fashioned holi day celebration by Portland’s own Trail Band on Saturday, December 6, and a perfor mance by the Oregon Sym phony, under the direction of Resident Conductor Murry Sidlin, on Thursday, February 12, 1998. In addition, Pacific University and the Forest Grove Chamber of Com merce will team up this year to present the annual “Stars in the Grove” community con cert showcase on Saturday, February 21, 1998. The Performing Arts Se ries, now in its fifth consecu tive season, is sponsored in part by Tuality Healthcare. All shows are held in McCready Hall, Pacific’s intimate 400- seat concert hall located in side the Taylor-Meade Per forming Arts Center. A season subscription to Pacific’s Performing Arts Se- ries is available at a 15-per- cent discounted price of $70.
