Deadline for farmers to sign up for EQIP program is June 30th The sign up period for USDA Environmental Incen tives Program (EQIP) for the North Coast Basin (Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook Counties) started June 9, 1997, and will close June 30, 1997. The purposes of the EQIP Program: 1) Assist producers to comply with environmental laws such as non-point pollu tion requirements. 2) Provide program assis tance to improve environmen tal conditions and meet other conservation needs. 3) Maximize the environ mental benefits per dollars expended. nancial assistance program in 1997 must file an application with a qualified agency by June 30, 1997. North Coast Basin Agricul ture producers interested in participating in the EQIP fi- United Way funds are distributed United Way of Columbia County distributed $116,744 this week. “This represents the first of two payments to agencies toward their 1997 allocation. Agencies will re ceive 25 percent more than in 1996,” said Suzanne Arnits, executive director. The sec ond payment will be sent in December, 1997. Among the 23 member Vernonia Farmers’ Marketplace opened June 7th under the auspices of the Vernonia Downtown Business Association. Telemarketers prey on older citizens Older people account for more than half of all victims of phony telemarketers, accort- ing to the FBI. The National Fraud Infor mation Center offers these warning signs. Fraud may be occurring if an older person is: • Receiving lots of junk mail for contests, “free” trips, prizes and sweepstakes. • Getting frequent calls from strangers offering valu able awards or great money making opportunities. • Making repeated and/or large payments to out-of-state companies. • Having payments picked up by private courier services. • Receiving lots of cheap items such as costume jewel ry. • Getting calls from organi zations to recover money that they have paid to telemar keters for a fee. The Columbia County Small Woodlands Association is sponsoring an upcoming dinner meeting to learn about this problem, said Landgren. The public is invited to learn what is happening with this disease and to consider if it is a problem in this area. Dr. Katy Kavanaugh, of the OSU Extension Service, will be the featured speaker. The dinner meeting will be at Camp Emerald Forest, near St. Helens. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. with the program to follow. Cost of the dinner is $8.50 per person.
