April 1 - Harassment on Knott St., suspects interviewed; no charges filed. Noise complaint, Spencer Ave. Criminal Mischief, student’s bike vandalized while parked in front of WGS. April2 - Noise complaint on A St. Juvenile runaway reportedly left town with a cousin, also reported as runaway; both returned to residence in Vernonia, parents were notified. April 3 - Complaint from repre sentative of Columbia County agency regarding a NSF check written to them by local business. DA’s office contacted, but could not prosecute because the business had closed. April 4 - Criminal Mischief to ve hicle on Maple St. After vehicle wouldn't start, a large amount of wa ter was found in the gasoline; no sus pects. Resident on First Ave. signed complaint against owners of habitual ly barking dog; Judy I. White, Ver nonia, cited for Allowing Dog to be Public Nuisance. Alarm at VHS, coach stated a player had entered and set off alarm. April 5 - Officer requested to re move unwanted person from busi ness on Bridge St. Alarm at WGS, open door; build ing searched and secured. Alarm at WGS, motion detector set off; building searched and se cured. April 7 - Investigated 9-1 -1 hang up calls from residence on Mississip pi St., four juveniles were playing with phone; incident handled through parents. April 8 - David E. Isaacson, Ver nonia, taken to CCSO jail by order of VJC. Assisted VFD with car fire on E Bridge St. April 9 - Responded to Polk Ave regarding an assault, both parties in terviewed; Scott A. Ferguson, Ver nonia, arrested for Assault IV, taken to CCSO jail; male juvenile also charged with Assault IV and referred to Juv. Dept. April 11 - Request to locate juve nile who had left residence after cur few; located and returned to parent. Alarm at business on Washington St.; building secured. April 12-Theft from residence on Juniper St., most property located and returned; case under investig- tion. April 13 - Assisted Vernonia Am bulance with call on Hwy 47 S. Had WCSO serve Edmond J. Bartholomey, Beaverton, with citation for Zoning Ordinance Violation in Vernonia. April 14 - Investigated 9-1-1 hang-up call from residence on Ruth Ave., small child was playing with phone. April 15 - Citizen complained of being threatened and wanted officer to talk to suspect; no charges filed. April 16 - Assisted Vernonia Am bulance. April 17 - Hit & Run accident on Nehalem St., witness described sus pect vehicle; owner of vehicle con tacted and interviewed; Jeremy JW Bergren, Vernonia, cited for Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver. Report from Public Works regard ing theft of picnic table from Hawkins Park; chains securing table were cut with bolt cutter; case under investiga tion. Dog complaint at residence on Arkansas Ave.; unable to locate own er of dog. Investigated 9-1-1 hang-up call at residence on Mississippi Ave.; resi dent stated no one had used the phone. April 18 - Assisted Vernonia Am bulance. Richard L. Mestas, Vernonia, cit ed for Maintaining Dog as a Nui sance. Tom C. McCusker, Portland, cited for Allowing Dog to be Public Nui sance. April 19 - Alarm at WGS, officer found door held open by a chair; teacher had set off alarm and didn't know how to disarm it. Alarm at VHS, E parking lot door unsecured, office door and class room window open; responsible par ty called to secure building. Tagged abandoned vehicle on Shady Lane; vehicle was towed. Domestic dispute on Jefferson Ave., parties interviewed; situation resolved. April 20 - Investigating theft of cellular phone and subsequent billing for calls made. Kevin W. Vanburen and Trudy C. Vanburen, Vernonia, arrested for As sault IV, both taken to CCSO jail. April 12 - Assisted Tigard PD with investigation by interviewing resident on Mist Dr. regarding stolen property; info sent to Tigard PD. Unwanted person at residence on B St.; subject left scene, could not be located. April 22 - Theft from vehicle on Jefferson Ave., suspect interviewed; property was returned; victim did not press charges. April 23 - Assisted Metro West Ambulance, contacted daughter of patient. April 24 - James E. Grimes, We natchee, arrested for Endangering Welfare of a Minor; taken to CCSO jail. James J. Jacobs Jr., Hillsboro, ar rested on warrant from West Linn, taken to CCSO jail. Talk with students on WGS play ground regarding their use of foul language and disrespectful behavior kids said they would stop. April 26 - Richard W. Titus, Ver nonia, cited for Assault IV; two juve niles cited for Criminal Mischief Three and referred to Juv. Dept. Alarm call at WGS; all doors and windows found secure. Traffic........................ 2 County Jail Report The Columbia County Jail is designed to house thirty- three male prisoners and six female prisoners. During the week of May 4- 10, male population exceed ed capacity every day; female population ranged from two to six. The jail was on Cite & Re lease status all week. One male was booked and released for DUII and DWS. There were five Court releas es due to overcrowding, in cluding one DUII, two Assault 4, one Assault 4 and Reck less Endangering, one early release on Contempt. Our interests are very likely the same as yours — to improve Vernonia’s quality of life and to create business op portunities and increased eco nomic vitality for the city. The Chamber sponsors a number of activities throughout the year. Most notably, the Santa’s Shop, Bridge Street Christmas lights and the East er Egg Hunt. April 28 - Car fire in front of Mini- Mart, officer pushed vehicle to open area of parking lot; VFD extinguished fire. Report of obscene phone call, resident accepted a collect call and caller became vulgar. Phone bill showed call originated from phone booth at a McDonald’s. Page 9 Large; $100 fine, each count. May 13,1997 May 20, 1997 Dick Titus, Vernonia, plead ed not guilty to charge of As- sult IV. Set for trial. Dwayne Hines, Vernonia, found guilty after trial to Fur nishing Alcohol to a Minor; 1 year jail, suspended; $350 fine; 120 hours community service in lieu of fines; 2 years bench probation; repayment of court appointed attorney fees. Richard Mestas, Vernonia, pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Allowing a Dog to Run at Sam Potter, Vernonia, pleaded guilty to Assault IV; 180 days in jail suspended to 15 days; $2500 fine suspend ed to $500; 3 years probation; anger & drug treatment; no contact with victim. Pleaded guilty to Menacing; 180 days in jail suspended to 15 days; $2500 fine suspended to $500; 3 yrs. probation; confis cated one handgun. Show Cause Hearings.... 6 S h eriff com pletes special cou rse Columbia County Sheriff Philip Derby has returned af ter completion of a two-week program at the National Sher iffs’ Institute (NSI) in Long mont, Colorado. The NSI program was de veloped by the School of Pub lic Administration of the Uni versity of Southern California, Los Angeles, to develop and enhance the executive skills of sheriffs. Derby attended with 25 other first-term sheriffs from 19 states. The program is funded by Congress through an appropriation to the Na tional Institute of Corrections. Other activities include p ro d u c in g and p rin tin g a brochure listing Vernonia area businesses and services. We recently added a “Vernonia Welcome” for new residents, prom oting area businesses and introducing newcomers to the many opportunities in the community. C ham ber m em bers work behind the scenes on many other events, either as individ uals or as representatives of the Chamber. The Chamber recently secured a grant that is presently being used to help fund the development of the new municipal building. Once completed, the new building will house a visitor information center operated by the Cham ber. It shouldn’t be surprising that the Chamber is involved in these activities. The Cham ber is made up of people who care about the community. As with any all-volunteer organi zation, we are only as strong as those who participate. As a result, we work hard to man age our precious resources of time, money and people. We w elcom e cu rre n t C ham ber members to attend our month ly Chamber meeting, held on the second W ednesday at 7:30 a.m. C ham ber m em bership is not exclusive to businesses. Any person with an interest in improving our community is welcome to participate. We have the opportunity to seize the moment and move forward, or allow momentum to stall because of apathy or a lack of teamwork.
