Page 6 The INDEPENDENT, January 1,1997 {Community Vernonia Senior Citizens Center is starting 1997 with a new dishwasher. The “flood dunked” one finally gave out. Also, there is a new rug at the entrance door of the dining room. A little bit at at a time, flood-damaged items are be ing replaced. The center is extending a big ‘Thank You” to all the vol unteers and pie bakers who made the seniors’ Christmas Dinner such a big success. Thanks also to all the Scouts who made the colorful place mats that brightened up our dinner tables. Even to the lit tle Cub Scouts who picked up, and sold, pop cans and gave the proceeds to the cen ter, to help with Christmas Mist 4-H club members bring joy Dinner. Thank all of you so very much. No trips have been planned for January...have to rest up from all the Holidays. Birthdays for January: 1st, Irene Hillsbery; 14th, Grace Mathews; 15th, Sandy Frantz; 16th, Ora George and Mary Lue Harmon; 20th, Pa tricia Olson. So - Happy New Year, everyone. Hope 1997 treats everyone better than 1996. Local Granges slate card games January 4th will initiate ;ard and game nights at the /ernonia Grange, at 7:00 xm. The 1997 season will :ontinue into the summer, vith card games or board 7:00 p.m. Though the traditional card game has been pinochle, people are welcome to sug- gest other games or to bring in board games. All ages and skill levels are welcome, said Vernonia Grangemaster Robb Wilson. There is no charge, but a do nation is asked for to help pay the utilities. The youth made some of the decorations, as did the women’s soup group in Mist. Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian Church, in Portland, collected decorations and money for lights at their Thanksgiving services. Interior wreaths were handmade by Mona Young, an employee at Lutheran Family Service. Supplies were paid for by Lutheran Disaster Response and Mt. Scott Park Presbyter ian Church. The 4-H mem bers boxed up the lights and ornaments and delivered them to local residents. People who do not read lose as much as people who can not.
