I i lu v u y iiiu u ii cerem onies were held August 17 for Joseph Cottam, 17, who has earned his Eagle Scout Award. Cottam is a member of Troop 195 sponsored by the Banks Branch, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Boy Scouts must complete many requirements to achieve Eagle, the highest rank in the organization. Re quirements include earning 21 merit badges, learning skills in first aid and camping, performing community ser vice, and holding leadership positions. Living by the Scout Oath and Law are also impor tant parts of becoming an Ea gle Scout. Only about two- percent of those who join the Boy J Scouts of America earn » T CC,UI uieir eagle scout Award, Scouting’s highest honor. Cottam's service project involved painting two large maps on the playground at Banks Elementary School. He worked with Steve Cal loway, Banks Elementary School Assistant Principal in coordinating and executing the project. He lead troop members and high school friends in completing the pro ject. The finished product was enthusiastically received by the teachers at the school. They use the map to show where current events are happening. Students will also play geography games on the map. He has worked for three summers as a youth counselor and skills instructor at Camp Pioneer and Camp Merriwether, Boy Scout camps located Southeast of Salem and near Tillamook, respectively. He is a Brother hood Member of the Order of the Arrow, a service group of honor campers within the Boy Scouts. Cottam is an active mem ber of the Banks Branch of the LDS Church. He has re ceived the On My Honor Award as an active Boy Scout from the church as well as the Duty To God award for partic ipation in the church’s Young Men program. He has also served in many other leader ship positions at church. Cottam is an honors stu dent at Banks High School with a 4.0 GPA through his Junior Year, and a member of the National Honor Society. Last spring he was honored by Banks High School as Ju nior Student of the year.
