The INDEPENDENT, July 17,1996 Page 9 B-V Track Club seeking funds for Junior Olympics The Banks-Vernonia Track Club is seeking donations to help send its 4 x 400 relay team to the Junior Olympics National competition in Hous ton, Texas, July 23-28. The team of 15 and 16- year-old girls is composed of Dasha Wakefield and Sara Riggle of Banks, both of Banks High School, Ellie Prpich of Vernonia High School and Lori Howard of Nestucca High School. Howard will also compete in the high jump. The girls earned their way to the nationals by placing second in the State Junior Olympics and third in the Re g io n a l at Pullman, Washing ton, last weekend. The club was started when Wakefield, an eager track competitor, tired of being a single entry among the teams involved in the Junior Olym pics. Her coach, BHS track coach Troy Miller, suggested Prpich, who had been practic ing on the Banks track since the Feb. flood, and Riggle. A fourth girl was involved but was unable to continue, so Howard was brought in later. Now there were enough for a relay team, but Junior Olympics regulations said they had to be a club, there fore a club was formed. Wakefield’s mother, Deanna Pickar (who is also Howard’s older sister), and Prpich's mother, Ellie, are the presi dent and vice-president of the club. In addition to seeking do nations, the girls plan on vari ous fund raising efforts, in cluding can and bottle drives. Anyone who can help send the girls, their coach and chaperones to Houston, or who would like more informa tion, is asked to contact Pickar at 324-8002, or Prpich at 429-3315.
