O w ne r Kai W ing Chen brings 17 years of restaurant marriage. Their first son, 13- year-old Feng was born in Canton. The next two sons, Wa, 11, and Danny, 7, were born in America. Though Chen stays in Ver nonia and keeps the restau rant open all week, the rest of the fam ily remains in Port land, com ing to Vernonia Fri day through Sunday, when you’ll find them all helping in the restaurant. The New China Restaurant opens daily at 10:30 a.m. and features a wide range of lunch specials Monday through Fri day until 3:00 p.m. for only $3.95. There is also an Am er ican menu. The full dinner menu in cludes Cantonese, Mandarin and Szchewan classics that will satisfy every taste. Dinner is served until 10 p.m. Mon day through Thursday, until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. They also have food to go. VERNONIA FIRE DISTRICT REPORT FOR MAY 1996 FIRE COMPANY Simantel family farm closes its U-PICK operation One enjoyable sum m er time activity for many fam ilies is driving out to a farm and picking fruit, vegetables and flowers. For over forty years people have enjoyed picking strawberries from the Sim an tel farm north of Hillsboro. For the last ten years, customers cou ld also pick peppers, plum s and many other fruit and veg eta ble crops. A l though the farm will continue to grow produce, Simantel’s U-PICK operation will be dis continued. A s th e ir farm changes more to nursery and floracul- tu re “th e U -PIC K program was hard to keep up with,” ac cording to farm m anager Mar cus Simantel. “We now ship cut flowers, operate a retail nursery at the farm, and con tinue to grow and retail vari ous fru its, veg eta bles and AOL names Professional Loggers Fred Bergerson Logging of Vernonia, Turner Logging, Inc. of Banks, and VanNatta Bros, of Rainier, have all com pleted the requirem ents necessary for receipt of special recogni tion as Oregon Professional Loggers. The designation recog nizes those Oregon logging contractors who make a spe cial effort to continue their pro fessional education in select ed aspects of the logging business. This new professional des ignation program is adminis- tered by Associated Oregon Loggers, a Salem -based as sociation that is a national leader in logging industry edu cation and training programs. The Oregon Professional Logger program is recognized as meeting the requirements of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, a national effort of the American Forest and Pa per Association whose objec tive is to further the principles of sustainable forestry on pri vate forests as well as on oth er forested lands.
