The INDEPENDENT, April 17,1996 Page 13 New course will train volunteers in all aspects of food preservation Master Food Preservers is a program of the OSU Exten sion Service that trains volun teers in all aspects of food preservation (canning, pick ling, drying, freezing, jarns/jel- lies), provides complete up- to-date food preservation in form atio n and asks fo r 30 hours in return, volunteering in their communities. Classes will be W ednes days, May 1 - June 5 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ex tension Conference Room in the Courthouse in St. Helens. There is no charge for the tra in in g , and all volunteer time may be scheduled to fit individual needs and inter ests. Upon com p le tion of the Master Food Preserver train ing, vo lu n te e rs w ill have hands-on experience check ing pressure canner gauges, recording radio spots, dis tributing food preservation in formation, answering ques tions, dem onstrating tech niques for groups or individu als, and setting up displays at county fairs. Tuality program on domestic violence “Domestic Violence in Our Community,” an overview of domestic violence, the myths, facts and cycles of abuse, will be presented by Kathleen Hart, program services direc tor, Domestic Violence Re source Center. She will B-V Linear Park offering free fir seedlings to celebrate Earth Day In observance of Earth Day, Banks/Vernonia State Park will distribute Douglas fir seedlings from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, April 22. ‘The seedlings will be pro vided to the public for plant ing at hom e,” said Ranger Scott Green. “The park ex pects to give away 300 seedlings from the office be low the Buxton Trailhead” The seedlings will be given on a first-come, first-served basis, up to five per family, along with planting instruc tio n s from O regon S tate Parks Department and the O regon D epartm ent of Forestry. The seedlings have been provided by the forestry department Phipps Nursery. “Many other Oregon Parks and Recreation Department facilities will also distribute see dlin gs thro ug hou t the state for Earth Day,” Green added. S ta tistics show that d o mestic violence cuts across all ethnic and socioeconomic lines. More often than not, it occurs in front of children. P o lice in W ashington County field average six do mestic violence calls a day, with incidents occurring three tim e s m ore fre q u e n tly on weekends than on weekdays. On more than half of the calls, children are present. The Bureau of National Af fairs estimates that about one million workdays each year are lost in the U.S. as a result of do m estic vio le n ce , or about $6 billion in losses to American companies. O rg an izatio n will support county fair A new group, “Friends of the Columbia County Fair” , has been form ed to raise funds so the Columbia Coun ty Fair can award premiums to fa ir participants and ex hibitors.
