The scouts will be selling their delicious array of cook ies on March 8 and 15 at U.S. Bank, Vernonia Branch, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on March 9 and 16 at Vernon ia Sentry Market from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Money earned from cookie sales is earm arked fo r a whale watching trip to Fort Stevens, the OMSI Engineer ing Cam p and Red Cross baby sitting courses. Casino Night will aid co-op preschool The annual Casino Night to benefit Vernonia Coopera tive Preschool is more impor tant this year than ever be fore—this time it’s needed to help mitigate serious flood dam age to the preschool building on Adams Avenue. Casino Night will be Satur day, March 9 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Lew’s Place. In addition to an entertaining evening, there will be many prizes including the chance for trip for two to Reno, a tele vision set, a night for two at the Hallmark Resort in Sea side, Leupold binoculars, a g ift c e rtific a te to J a k e ’s Restaurant and a gift certifi cate to Benihana Japanese Restaurant. Page 13 U.S. fiscal cuts may harm summer jobs MTC Training & Placement Services is currently planning its Summer Youth Em ploy ment Training Program for 1996. MTC received ove r $360,000 in Job T ra in in g Partnership Act (JTPA) funds and served over 200 partici pants during last sum m er’s program. At this time, the fed eral government has not ap propriated any funds for the 1996 program . MTC has been ab le to leverage $100,000 in ca rry-fo rw a rd and youth project dollars and is soliciting further funding. A significant cut in services and numbers served is expected. The summer program will begin May 1, 1996, and run through S eptem ber. P ro grams will focus on summer school, academic enrichment activities, work experience, school-to-work activities, sub sidized & unsubsidized em- ployment opportunities.
