Talk on atoms, integrated circuits Dr. Mary Fehrs, professor of physics at Pacific Universi ty, will speak on the creation of the atom bom b and the in tegrated circuit, at the fourth lecture in the 1995-96 Presi d e n t’ s L e c tu re S e rie s , on Wednesday, March 6. Dr. F e h rs’ d iscu ssio n w ill focus on the developm ent of the atomic bom b and the inte grated circu it, both re vo lu ti- nary devices (in radically d if ferent ways) that were devel oped around the same time. In both instances, research universities, industry and gov ernm ent all played im portant ro le s in the d e ve lo p m e n t o f the te c h n o lo g ie s th a t m ade them p o ssib le , bu t th e p ro cesses were quite different in A m e ric a , G e rm a n y , a n d Japan, she says. H ow th e s e te c h n o lo g ic a l developm ents varied in differ ent societies can tell us much a b o u t m o d e rn s c ie n c e an d m odem society, according to Fehrs. Dr. F e h rs re c e iv e d h e r Ph.D. in physics from Boston C ollege in 1972. Fehrs, who has taught in the Natural S ci e n c e s D iv is io n a t P a c ific since 1979, co-directs the an nual S um m er S cience Cam p for Girls at Pacific University, w hich is fun de d by the U.S. Department of Energy. T h e P re s id e n t's L e c tu re Series at Pacific University is now in its 13th year. The se ries was established in 1983 as a m e a n s o f s h a rin g th e s ch o la rsh ip and te a c h in g of Pacific’s faculty with the cam pus an d w ith th e p e o p le of the surrounding com munities.
