I The INDEPENDENT, Feb. 21,1996 Pag» 5 Health Education awards available to community organizations Community and public or ganizations in eight western Oregon counties can apply now for up to $3,000 each in awards from the Oregon Pa cific Area Health Education Center (AHEC) for training and educating health care professionals. Oregon Pacific AHEC is of fering Educational Scholar ship Awards to help organiza tions pay for training and edu cating traditional health care providers, emergency service personnel, home health and hospice providers, m ental health personnel, long-term care p ro v id e rs and oth e r health care professionals. “ Financial resources for training and education are rarely available, especially in volunteer organizations,” said Oregon Pacific AHEC Educa tion Coordinator Pat Lewis. ‘This is a way to support the community in providing pro- course are limited to $300 per individual. grams that will work locally." O regon Pacific AHEC is one of five private, nonprofit area health education centers acro ss the state that are working with Oregon Health S ciences U niversity, local health professionals and edu cational institutions to attract, train and retain more health care providers in rural and underserved parts of Oregon. The scholarship awards are available to organizations in Benton, Clatsop, Columbia, Lincoln, Linn, Polk, Tillamook and Yamhill counties. All or ganizations applying for an award must be willing to pro vid e a 15 percent m atch (cash or in-kind). Examples of in -kin d m atches would in clude staff or volunteer time in teaching, writing articles, developing health care re sou rces or co o rd in a tin g events, or providing equip ment or facilities for training. Awards for a specific training Oregon Pacific AHEC is particularly interested in pro jects that involve a variety of health professionals or more than one organization, in the hope that awards will become seed money for some new program s, acco rd in g to Lewis. Oregon Pacific AHEC is particularly interested in pro viding awards that will help meet community needs, es pecially in emergemcy ser vices and mental health care.
