These loggers, who are used to working outdoors in all w e athe r, w ere e xcite d a b ou t le a rn in g to o p e ra te state-of-the-art mechanized harvesters. S in ce 1989, the use of Scandinavian harvester-for warder machines for thinning and se le ctio n lo gg in g has been g a in in g a cce p ta n ce across the northwest region. The equipment demonstrated in the fo re s te d h ills near Scotts Valley has improved the ability to thin stands of trees, without damage to re m aining le a v e -tre e s , and without im pacting valuable Firm earns Logging Safety award Iron Triangle Logging of John Day accepted Husqvar- na Forest and Garden Equip m ent’s O utstanding Safety Award, at the Northwest Re gional Logging Safety Confer ence, in Bend last month. Husqvarna’s award recog nizes companies that have excelled in implementing suc cessful logging safety pro grams. Iron Triangle is one of twelve companies to be rec ognized nationally by Husq- varna in 1995 for promoting logging safety. Husqvarna is a Swedish chainsaw manu facturer and leading supplier of pro fessio na l chainsaw s and safety equipment to log gers worldwide. In presenting the award, H usqvarna re p re s e n ta tiv e C h a rlie S m ith said th a t a good woods safety record is the result of safety programs that help loggers work safely day in and day out in often dangerous situations. Jack Young, Merilee Young and Duane D avey are c o owners of Iron Triangle Log ging. The company promotes safe work pra ctices fo r its employees in logging and for est road co n stru ctio n p ro je c ts . Iron T ria n g le was formed 12 years ago and cur rently has 80 employees. The third annual Northwest R e gion al Lo gg in g S a fe ty Conference was attended by over 180 loggers from across the five-state (Oregon, Wash ington, Idaho, California, and Montana) Northwest region. Loggers meet annually to ad dress logging safety issues. The keynote speaker, Jim James, of Willamette Indus tries, spoke about improving industry-wide commitment to excellence in logging safety and forestry stewardship in Oregon. The convention also kicked off O re g o n ’s P ro fe ssio n a l Logger Program, which rec ognizes and encourages log ger education and safety in the workplace. Hammel joins staff at Fuiten-Rose Richard Hammel recently jo in e d the sta ff at Fuiten- Rose Mortuary Chapels, Inc. in Forest Grove and Vernon ia. Adopting new technology and innovative methods has not been without challenge. Representatives from both S isu and Pape Bros. Inc. of Eugene facilitat ed the discussion s held in sm all groups around th e ir "forest classroom”. According to Kent Stevens, forest products manager with Pape, th e w oods s e m in a r gives the loggers a chance to d iscu ss h a rv e s tin g te c h niques and maintenance with other new operators, while getting hands-on experience with the harvester. The system, commonly re ferred to as “cu t-to -le n g th ” because of its m echanical cutting of log lengths, p re sents a unique opportunity to thin forests while minimizing impacts. The harvester ma chine severs the tree from the stump and cuts the pole into logs, while the forwarder ma chine carries, or forwards, the logs to the roadside where they are loaded onto trucks. Efficient operation of the m echanized h a rv e s te r re quires ample training and ex p e rie n ce .
