T h e INDEPENDENT, A ug ust 2 3 ,1 0 9 6 By Nancy Burch, Librarian Vernonia Public Library Vernonia’s Summer Reading Program is history once again for 1995, except for award ing the certificates to those youngsters who read at least ten books during the summer. Bring lists to the library before the end of Au gust to receive certificates and McDonald’s vouchers for frozen yogurt. The summer of puppetry ended with the presentation by Walter Minkel of Coyote Plac ing the Stars in the Sky. The library was filled wall-to-wall at the appointed time with children ready to enjoy the play. Everyone waited pa tiently for Mr. Minkel who was delayed about an hour by construction on the Sunset High way. It was well-worth the wait as Iktome the Spider, Grandfather Tortoise, Bear, and Pos sum vied with Coyote to try to get the honor of putting the stars in the sky. Young and old alike interacted with Minkle’s puppets as the bee kept buzzing around and hiding, the bear got his nose stuck in the honey-pot, and the possum kept eating those red-hot peppers, what talent and practice it takes to make pup pets really “come alive” and what an enjoyable afternoon it was for everyone. Those who worked on and rode on the Successful revival of Jamboree Court To the Editor The Jamboree Court Com mittee would like to thank ev eryone involved in making the revival of the Jamboree Court a success. W e had w onderful spon sors who gave of their time, m a te ria ls a n d /o r m oney to help us with all the work that goes into a project like this. S a n d ra M c L e a n ’s Florist shop do nated th e beautifu l Queen’s bouquet, princesses’ roses and boutonnieres for the men. She also let us use p la n ts a n d tre e s fro m h e r nursery for coronation night decorations. D olly K eenon d e c o ra te d th e h a tc h e t (p ro v id e d by Keenon Land Services) which was used for the King's scep- tor, plus g a v e us so m any great ideas and suggestions for decorating. A BIG thank you to Gwin and Son Logging for sponsor ing our truck wash by provid ing the location, materials, in formation and so much tim e a n d s u p p o rt. A d d itio n a l Friends of the Library float in the Jamboree parade also reported having fun, fun, fun. The Longoria, Hardwick, and Tatman families, and Caren McGaugh were responsible for seeing that the summer readers had a float to be proud of in the parade. They created “Vernon ia" from cardboard, construction paper and paint. A logger, police officer, nurse, cheer leader, waitress, fireman, storekeeper, and mechanic were represented as “working to gether with the recreational aspects of Ver nonia. Sentry provided the candy for the chil dren to throw from the float, Sandra McLean Nursery provided trees to perk-up the entry, and S chool D istrict 47J p ro vid e d paper, paints, etc. Once again, I want to stress the importance of the community effort that is involved in all of the library projects. W hether it is sum m er reading, holiday open house, or sprucing-up the library, volunteers are the force that brings projects to successful completion. Thank you all! thanks to Buckner Land Sal vage for allowing us to wash their trucks at their location. The tru c k w ash w as o u r biggest fundraiser. At this time, I would like to thank the per son who took down the flag and rem ind them the next time we will put out the flags is on Labor Day. We would P age 3 a p p re c ia te it very m uch if you, whoever you are, would place o u r fla g back in the p la c e fro m w hich you re moved it for everyone again to enjoy. This past week we under stan d th a t a p ic k -u p was placed on the s id e w a lk in front of Crazy C harlie’s. At that time a barrel of flowers sitting on the sidewalk was picked up and placed in the back of the pick-up, causing the bottom of the barrel to fall out. We would appreciate the person(s) responsible for this action to replace it with a new barrel and reimbursement of $50.00 fo r the co st of the flowers. The person or per sons responsible may send any Vernonia Pride Member the money to cover replace ments caused by this act of vandalism. In an earlier, article in The INDEPENDENT it was noted th a t th e re is a re w a rd of $100.00 for information lead ing to the arrest and convic tion of those involved in acts of vandalism. We need your help in keeping our town and the projects we have worked on, cared for, so that every one in town and visitors to ou r tow n may enjoy them . Thank-you for any help you may give us. S u n d a y , A u g . 1 3 th , my buddy was involved in a mo torcycle accident when a deer jum ped in front of his bike, about a half mile west of Big Eddy Park. W e want to thank all of the wonderful passers-by and all the members of the local Fire & R escue team s. Everyone was very nice and helpful and all of your efforts were greatly appreciated. And good news, Keith will b e m aking a full reco very; miraculously, his injuries were m inor and he w as released from the hospital that sam e e v e n in g . Keith W ade Clint Vandehey Beaverton A different view of religion and church To the Editor A couple of weeks ago, I w as on A m bergris C a y e in Belize attending the Sea-Air Show put on by various Latin American countries. I ordered Pupusas and sat across a rough wooden table from a kind of tough-looking, stocky little m an w ho w as saying G ra c e o ver his P u p u s a s .
