By Nancy Burch, Librarian Vernonia Public Library Two more afternoon sessions and the Jam boree parade and 1995 Summer Reading Program will be finished. Wednesday, July 26, will be the last session with youngster partici pation and Monday, July 31, will be the grand finale presentation by Walter Minkel of Coyote Places the Stars in the Sky. These programs will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the library and will each last about one hour. These Summer Reading Programs could not take place without community support. Last week Sentry Market provided “porridge” for the hot Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Each year School District 47J, with particular help from Marguerite Nice and Randy Ault- man, contributes the necessary m aterials such as construction paper and paints. Every parent who attends is called into service to read, supervise, or help in some way. All of the puppet supplies were collected and read ied for easy assembly this year by Caren Mc- Gaugh. Money to pay for the puppeteer came from donations, McDonalds donated gift cer tificates for frozen yogurt. Vernonia’s young summer readers would not have the fun of participating in these special programs without help from these interested, generous people. Be sure and watch for the Library’s entry in the Jamboree Parade! Keep in mind, too, that two books written by the Jamboree Parade Grand Marshal, Robin Cody, are currently available in the library. The first, a novel published in 1992 is entitled Ric- ochet River. Voyage o f a Summer Sun, published in 1995, relates Cody’s discoveries about the Columbia River as he canoes from its source in the Canadian Rockies to its mouth at Asto ria. During the eighty-two day journey, Cody takes his canoe around huge, powerful dams, through dangerous rapids, across gigantic reservoirs, and down the mighty Columbia to reach the open sea. Along his journey he “lis tens” to the people he meets and learns that few are pleased with the changes that have been made to the Columbia River for the sake of hydraulic and nuclear power. Even with the realization that the environment is really in cri sis, he can’t help but be amazed at the power system that is created by the fourteen huge dams. This is a book to enjoy and to raise questions about the consequences of altering such a power as the Columbia. Cody’s under standing of and concern for the Columbia Riv er, its inhabitants and those of the surrounding area are wonderfully illustrated in this book. Reading this is an experience that all who live in and love the Pacific N orthw est should share. Robin Cody will be in the vicinity of the Jamboree Headquarters on Saturday, August 6, to sell and autograph copies of these two books. Here are some important do’s and don’ts concerning the seniors recycling effort. • The seniors can use only clean, wearable clothing and working usable items. • Donated appliances must be complete, including elec tric cords and, if possible, di rections for their use. • Furniture should be un broken, reasonably clean and untattered. • Dishes must be usable, not cracked, chipped or bro ken since they are used for food. • Pots and pans must be in usable condition-no chipped porcelain. • Shoes in pairs, pinned or tied together and in wearable condition. They should not re- quire repair to be usable. • Slippers-no cloth or fuzzy types. • Games and puzzles must be complete. • Baby furniture, car seats, stro lle rs and rid ea ble toys must be unbroken and us able. If you won’t use it for your child because it is un safe, please don’t ask anyone else to put their child at risk. When you bring damaged, dirty, broken or unusable ma te ria l, the s e n io r c e n te r is forced to pay for your g a r bage disposal and, instead of helping the se n io rs o r the needy in the community, you hurt the seniors and the ones they serve. Thanks, Terri VanMatre Secretary Fair Board wants to set errors straight To the Editor: The Columbia County Fair Board apologizes to the citi zens of the county fo r the many m istakes, om issions and errors in the 1995 Fair Book. The annual book is solely the product of an indepen dent contractor and the board was not afforded the opportu nity to proof read or make changes in the editorial copy. C ontrary to som e s ta te ments made, the fair did not receive any monies from the p u b lic a tio n of the book, sonething we intend to rectify in future publications. Some of the most glaring errors we wish to apprise the public of include: The Rodeo will be on Fri day and Saturday, July 28 and 29th, starting at 7 p.m. The Farm Scramble will be on Thursday, July 27. The event is an informal get- together of branch members and friends to show equip ment, tell stories, meet new people and have a good time before winter sets in. Antique gas engines, farm tractors and logging equip ment will be on display. There will also be handcrafted items for sale and a potluck dinner on the 16th at 6:00 p.m. Participation by local resi dents is not only invited, it is encouraged. Branch 15 will be joined by members of the John Deere Two Cylinder Club, the Cater pillar Club and Branch 23 of the Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association.
