t ■ TheJNDEPENDENT^Januar^l^W ^^ageja Vernonia 1994 w eather review The weather in 1994 was quite a treat for Vernonia resi dents, especially since it fol lowed the cold, wet summer of 1993. The highest temperature of the year, 99 degrees fahren- heit, occurred in July, but the average high for the year was a temperate 73.83 degrees. It was warm enough for most vegetable gardens to develop e x c e lle n t cro p s, yet cool enough to keep the garden ers from getting overheated. E very m onth from M arch through October saw temper a tu re s of 75 de g re e s or warmer. The coldest day of the year was, as usual, in February, when the mercury dropped to cip ita tio n ; that declined in April, May and June to 5.39 in che s and alm ost d is a p peared from July thro u g h September, when only 1.33 inches gathered in the rain gauge. October, November and December made up for the lack of rain earlier in the year, with an accumulation of 28,41. a chilly 14 degrees. The aver age low temperature was be low fre e z in g at 27.25 d e grees. Precipitation for the year to ta lle d 51.14 inches, the closest Vernonia has been for several years to its historic ave rag e of 55 in che s per year. Pattee, 86, Mesa, Ari zona, died Jan. 5, 1995, at Mesa General Hospital of congestive heart failure. Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at Gable Funeral Chapel in Portland. Burial was in Willamette National Cemetery. Mrs. Pattee was born in Hood River. She moved to Portland at an eariy age and attended school there. She worked in various health care facilities in the greater Portland area. She was a Vernonia resident for several years and moved to Mesa in 1989. Mrs. Pattee was a lifelong mem ber of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dee, in 1986. Survivors include two daughters, V. Cristella (Cris) Daugherty of Mesa and Dorene Eden of Portland; a son, Richard Davenport of Florence; three sisters, Dorothy Hall and Hazel Lewis, both of Ogden, Utah, and Connie Courtier of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; three brothers, Rodney Dav enport of Lehi, Utah, Remington Dav enport of St. George, Idaho, and My ron Davenport of Idaho Falls, Idaho; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. MCKEE Pauline Elizabeth McKee, 80, Rainier, died Jan. 5, 1995 at St. Johns Medical Center in Longview, Wash. A graveside service was held, Jan. 9, in Vernonia Memorial Ceme tery. Mrs. McKee was born Oct. 24, 1914, near Mansfield, Wash., to Rus sell and Myrtle Painter Laymance. She grew up in Pateros, Wash. She married Ralph M. McKee in 1933. They lived in the Mansfield area until moving to Portland in 1941. In 1944, they moved to Vernonia, where they owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1974, they started trav eling, then settled in Rainier in 1990. Mrs. McKee worked for several years in the W ashington Grade School cafoteria. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Vernonia, and the Mt. Heart Rebekah Lodge. In addition to her husband, sur vivo rs include a son, D arrell of Longview Wash.; daughters, Sharron Rockwood of Hillsboro and Peggy K ispert of Tillam ook; brothers, Quentin Laymance of Seattle and Dale Laym ance of W enatchee, Wash.; sisters, Grace Laymance of Vancouver, Wash., and Mabel McK- • ee of Kennewick, Wash.; 11 grand children; and 13 great-grandchildren. THOMPSON Auda Moniqua Thompson, 68, Vernonia, died Jan. 4, 1995, in a For est Grove care center, of a stroke. A graveside service was held Jan. 9, in Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. John Cahill of the First Bap tist Church in Vernonia, officiating. Mrs. Thompson was bom March 1, 1926, in Bunch, Okla., to Walter and Luella White. She grew up in California. She married William Thompson in 1956 at Reno, Nevada. They lived in Marysville, Calif., before moving to Eugene in 1963 and to Vernonia in 1968. Mrs. Thompson worked at the Birdseye Cannery for several years and then for Tektronix. She attended the First Baptist Church in Vernonia. Survivors, in addition to her hus band, include her sons, Robert Black of Junction City, James of El Paso, Texas, Donald and William Jr., both of Portland; daughter, Wanda Black of Salem; brother, James White of Elizabeth City, N.C., sisters, Alameda Beebe and Fern Chote, both of Modesto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. BOLF W illiam Henry Bolf, 56, My ersville, Md., died Jan. 4, 1995 in Frederick, Md., of cancer. A memori al gathering was held, Jan. 7,1995, in the Keeney-Basford Funeral Home in Frederick. Mr. Bolf was bom Feb. 14,1938, in Portland. After graduating from Beaverton High School, he served with the U.S. Air Force. He gradu ated from Oregon State University in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in en gineering. After working for General Electric Co., he worked for many years as an electronics engineer in Chambers burg, Pa. In 1986, Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes honored Bolf for his work with children as a foster father and through Big Brothers-Big Sisters Inc. Survivors include his sons, Trevor R.
