By Robb Wilson, Curator Columbia County Historical Society Museum was four-years-old at the time and was not in school, which likely accounts for the mishap, but it made her a nonbeliever in Santa Claus. After that, she never was convinced that there was a real Santa, even though her mother continued to persuade her. She also remem bers that her childhood years were during the depression and that one present, some candy and an orange, were what children got for Christmas. What makes the holiday an occasion that most people remember, is the get-togethers of family and friends. As we get older, we look back on these get-togethers and realize their importance in our lives. We all have good memories and I hope we all make more this holiday season. Christmas Eve this year, your museum will be open until 4 p.m. and there will be some Christmas stories read and told. In addition, I have the Nutcracker Suite on a complete set of old 78 RPM records and will play it on the old w ind-up V ictro la thro ug hou t the day. Come, and enjoy!! Christmas memories, thinking back on good times with friends and family are, I think, some of the best parts of this season. I remember the special feeling the brightly glow ing lig h ts on all the houses and our Christm as tree gave me when I was about four-and-a-half. It was the first time I was aware of the excitement and joy of the season and it holds that magic still. That year too, was the year that Santa brought me a pedal car; a shiny red one that I rode all over the house and, when the weather got good, up and down the sidewalk on North Street. I still have snap shots of that little red car and I look at them once in a while; they keep the memory alive. In grade school, I remember the pageants and plays we were in, playing in the band and then, the arrival of Santa himself! I recall the many years with the BIG tree in the gym, the large lightbulbs on it and how we helped set it up and decorate it when we got to the eighth grade. Do you remember your first white Christ mas? Mine was in 1966 and Santa brought me a BB gun. I walked out the door and when I shot, the BBs would make little marks in the snow. Later we played on a new sled. The magic and secret there is, if you want snow on Christmas, get a sled. Recently, a local resident told me about her e xp e rie n c e as a young ch ild at a school Christmas function in one of the many little one-room schools in the area surrounding Ver nonia. When they had their pageant, Santa came and delivered little presents to all of the kids, except her. For some reason, her name wasn’t on his list, and she was forgotten. She This past summer I wrote about World War II and memories of D-Day, 50 years ago. It is now the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theater. In many re spects this was a more important, bloodier, lonelier and colder time for the men participat ing, as well as for their families at home. I would like us all to remember these people, too, and their sacrifices.
