R ichard E. Dahlin, Vice President and General Man ager of Cavenham, and Is abel M. Carden, Director of Special Projects for Hanson Industries, presented the do nations Aug. 18 at an “EMS Dinner Salute” at Surfsand- Haystack Gardens in Cannon Beach. The cash donations will be used to purchase equipment, such as adult and child man nequins for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, rescue tools and oximeters, a diagnostic tool for measuring blood oxygen level. In pre se n tin g th e g ifts, Dahlin said, “Cavenham’s for est management and lumber production operations involve a great deal of highway travel betw een site s, as w e ll as work in remote areas. H anson has made a long-term com m it ment to support this vital ser vice in communities in which we operate because we know that EMS needs our help. We com m end the EMS v o lu n teers and professionals for the dedicated service they provide whenever and wher ever they are needed.” In addition to its program of direct financial support to EMS units, Hanson under writes the production and dis tribution of public information materials, including television p u b lic se rv ic e a n n o u n c e ments, to raise awareness of EMS and encourage broader public financial support and volunteer participation. Genly, who started with Tuality Medical Center last May, is co o rd in a to r of Midwifery Services for Tuality Healthy Start; she works out of Tuality’s Forest Grove Clinic. Genly came to the medical field after developing a suc cessful career as a technical writer for a computer compa ny. She wasn’t unhappy with the work, but said she felt no personal satisfaction and de cided to seek another field. A fter considerable study of the possibilities, she enrolled in a three-year program for n o n -n u rs in g g ra d u a te s at Yale University; she complet ed the course in 1985. The directio n of G enly’s new career was determined by a desire to be helpful in a field she felt was important. “I care a lot about wom en’s health care,” she said, “and I especially like the education and support aspects of mid wifery.” Midwifery is in a partner ship with both modern medi cine and traditional methods, she explained. Midwives use modern medical techniques for intensive prenatal monitor ing, in order to detect and Tuality Healthy Start seeks to provide quality care to low income women on a sliding fee scale. No one w ill be turned away and both prena tal and gynecological care will be provided, on Wednesdays in Vernonia. Genly also does pre-con ception counseling, covering the physical and medical con cerns of those who are con s id e rin g pregnancy.
