Parcel Service adds ice cream vending to other businesses
Honk, ding, hummmmm,
are the sounds that accompa­
ny the patter of young feet in
Banks th is sum m er. Ice
cream is their desire, and the
noises are coming from the
ice cream carts put in service
by Banks Parcel Service.
Ray Deeth and Dale Wert,
o w n e r-o p e ra to rs of Banks
Parcel, were the subjects of a
previous Business Notes arti­
cle in the D ecem ber 22,
1993, issue of The Indepen­
dent. Then, they were giving
St. Nick a hand during the
Christmas rush and juggling
their many other services as
well. Since that time, the duo
has exp an de d th e ir o ffic e
space, and becom e ice
cream vendors.
Adding ice cream sales to
their business occurred when
they obtained a 1942 Cush­
man motor scooter in order to
deliver Faxes locally and, at
the same time, got an old bi­
cycle equipped with a freezer
in the front. Once the wiring
in the Cushman was repaired
and it was on the roa d, it
seemed as natural to sell ice
cream from the compartment
at the rear of the motor scoot­
er as it was to sell ice cream
from the bicycle.
The ice cream “guys” now
m ake th e ir rounds in the
evenings, offering nine flavors
of ice cream treats plus as­
sorted popsicles. If you’re qp-
able to capture the peddlers
as they trave l the stree ts,
Banks Parcel Service has a
stocked freezer in their office
as well, and it doesn’t travel
very fast at all.

A steak & chicken barbe­
cue is planned for Sunday,
August 14, at Camp Wilker­
son for the annual picnic and
barbecue of the Colum bia
Soil & W ater Conservation
D istrict. Chairm an W arren
Nakkela will host the event.
The picnic and meeting will
begin at 1:00 PM.
District cooperators, their
families and the general pub­
lic are invited to attend. The
District will provide the steak
and chicken main courses,
salads and beverages. Those
attending are asked to bring a
salad, condiment or dessert
dish.
After a brief business ses­
sion and presentations of the
Annual Report and financial
sta te m e n t, th e re w ill be
recognition of the D istrict’s
O u ts ta y in g C ooperators,

N etty and Tony Loos of
Looslea Dairy Farm, and Dis­
trict volunteers.
Local legislators are invited
to attend, offering an opportu­
nity fo r the public to learn
about Soil & Water Conserva­
tion issues and the outlook
for future goals and services.
