The hum of the saws cutting at a rate of 600,000 feet per day will soon be heard. It is expected that the first log will be stabbed about the tenth of July. That day, the day o f the first sawing, will go down in history. It will be the biggest day in the history of the Nehalem Valley. It will be the day that many people have anxiously waited for these many long years. A new era is dawning. A new industrial era. IN V ER NO NIA — TODAY IS BIG DAY FOR VERNONIA! A NEW INDUSTRIAL CENTER FOR OREGON VERNONIA, 50 MILES FROM PORTLAND The new town that is forty years old lies in the heart of the Big Timber. THE BIG MILL; The Oregon -American Co. Mill expects to begin sawing July 15, the boilers will be fired for the first time July 1. F or som e tw o years, work has been progressing every day on the large plant. From many acres of trees and brush this mill has risen. The company has 60 neat and up-to-date resi dences built for homes for a few of the employees. It is the inten tion to soon build 40 more hous es on "Spencer Hill". About 300 m en w ill be em ployed at the start up and will gradually in crease. The 40 acre pond is now full of logs as well as all the track room in the yards. The big mill is one of the show places of Oregon that is a big industrial asset to the state. GOING FULL FORCE Will Keep Pond Full of Logs as a Reserve in Case Camps Are Forced to Close Down VERNONIA MILL NOW RUNNING P lan t expected to turn out 600,000 feet of lumber in two eight hour shifts. About 400 men will be required for a single shift and the second shift will be em ployed as soon as market condi tions justify, says E.E. Hayes, superintendent of the plant.
