If you are interested in becoming part of a valuable community service your help is needed. W hether you are trained and certified as an Emergen cy Medical Technician or Arst Responder, or could provide c h ild c a re fo r d e p a rtm e n t members while they are on ambulance calls, there is a Cynthia and James Hayes were married July 10, 1992, in Reno, Nevada. Cynthia is a full-time emergency medical technician for the City of Vernonia; James has been a volunteer firefighter with the local department for three years, though he has a total of 17 years as an emergency services volunteer. They are at home on Riverside Drive. spot for you. Help is also needed with fund raising to update our emergency equip ment. If you are interested in join ing the department but lack training in emergency medi cal care, an EMT I (Emergen cy Medical Technician, Level One) course will be given this fall. The class w ill require one night per week from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. and, possibly, one S a tu rda y c la ss per month, for four months . The fee for the course has not yet been determined, but the department hopes to offer it at a reduced rate. Students will have the option of paying in a lum p sum o r m aking monthly payments. Financial aid, in the form of a rebate in trade for department service, is also being considered. In addition, volunteers are being sought to provide childcare for class participants. Fund raising is currently underway for the purchase a new Heart Monitor/Defibrilla- tor. The monitor currently be ing used is a I979 m odel Datascope, which is rapidly becoming obsolete; while m aintenance costs are in cre a sin g , re lia b ility is d e creasing. With a large por tion of local calls being "car diac related" and the nearest hospital emergency room be ing forty-five minutes away, it is very important to have reli able, up-to-date equipm ent that enables us to provide ef ficient service to the people in our community. The department hopes to purchase a LifePak 10 Moni- tor/Defibrillator/Pacem aker, that is manufactured by the PhysioControl C orporation. This monitor is widely used by Emergency Medical Ser vices throughout the country and is highly recommended. The cost with batteries and c h a rg e r is a p p ro x im a te ly $10.600. To date, the depart- ment has raised about $3,000 toward the purchase of this unit.
