The p la q u e w as p re s e n te d by Nancy Harwood, director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, at the annual RSVP program at the Vernonia Se nior Center. Most of the 40 plus guests were volunteers who have helped out at the senior cen ter throughout the past year. Each received a certificate of appreciation for their contri butions. G athe rin g at th e s e n io r center on June 22 were 27 members and guests of the Vernonia Doll C lub, to ex change ideas and learn about doll repair from Dorothy Bea son of Bea's Little People in Scappoose. A large number of seniors tra v e lle d to the C o lu m bia County Fair to share Seniors Day and to support their can didate for Queen of the My F a ir Lady C ourt, S cotty Weimer. Unfortunately, Scotty didn't win, but the judges' selection, Esther Adams of Scappoose, was a deserving winner. Etta Russell, last year's queen, did the honors, crowning her suc cessor. A u g u st w ill be a busy month for the seniors. They S a n d ra M e la a n will be entertaining guests at the Vernonia Friendship Jam boree on Aug. 7, 8 and 9. On the 12th, they plan to attend the RSVP picnic at Trojan Park and on the 18th, they will journey to Hillsboro Senior Center for lunch. The Q uilting Ladies w ill have their annual fabric on Aug. 19, 20 and 21. Please bring your newspa pers to our center, along with any usable household goods and clothing. An informational meeting on health care reform and ac cess to health care fo r all Oregonians, w ill be held at the Vernonia Health Center on T hursday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. Jim Pittman, PhD, F.N.P., a fam ily nurse practitioner at the health center, will discuss reform s needed to provide quality health care. He will also show a video and a n swer questions. Pittman is involved with the Oregon Nurses' Association Campaign for Better Heallth Care and with Oregon Health Action. The meeting is free; any one interested in the topic is urged to attend.
