K in d e rg a rte n and firs t grade classes will be com bined and kindergarten stu dents w ill attend school all day for three days each week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Under the current system, kindergarten classes are half days, five days a week, and the two grades are separate. The change is due partly in response to legislative action which mandates several edu ca tio n a l changes over the next few years, partly in re sponse to recommendations made by former elementary principal Gary W ilson, and partly in response to changes in busing requirements. B using w ill be re q u ire d next year, both to and from school. If kindergarten class es stayed on th e ir present schedule, an additional bus run would be required daily to tra n s p o rt th o se s tu d e n ts home. Four classrooms will be in volved in the changes next fall. Other changes will be in stituted in succeeding years. Lani Vandehey, who was elected to a vacant position on the board, was appointed to fill the p o s itio n thro ug h June 30. The elective term will start on July 1,1992. Graduation requirem ents were adopted for next year. A total of 25.5 units will be needed; 18.5 units will be re quired courses and seven units will be electives. The change was accomplished by deleting the Social Studies requirement and adding an elective. The 1992-93 budget was approved by the budget com mittee on April 13. A public hearing on the budget will be held June 11,1992. The next regular meeting of the directors will be held at Mist School on May 14. Head Start/OPP, a state and fe d e ra lly fun de d p re school program, is seeking Vernonia area students for the 1992-93 school year. The local program has room for eighteen preschoolers. The school is located in the Amer ican Legion Hall, 627 Adams in Vernonia. Eligible children must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 1992, Holce Logging Co., Inc.
