November 28,1990, The INDEPENDENT Centennial calendar filling with events From page 1 M inisterial A ssociation and the churches of Vernonia are pla n n in g an o ld -fa s h io n e d Thanksgiving program, includ ing a community dinner, prob ably on the Sunday before or after Thanksgiving. For December, the commit tee feels that Christmas will be Christmas, but a special effort will be made to enhance the decorating of store fronts and residences to reflect the centennial observance. In, am ong and betw een these events are many other possible activities. One group is d e v e lo p in g a V e rn on ia P ageant to be p re se n te d three times during the year; the re are o p p o rtu n itie s fo r youth groups to present pro April, the schools will present programs of historical interest, using dance, drama, etc. In May, The Ridge Riders Saddle Club w ill have the ir annual barbecue and horse show on M em orial Day. A s p rin g art fe s tiv a l is also scheduled fo r May, but the event is tentative as no plans have yet been developed. June, it is hoped, will see a c e le b ra tio n fo r the o ffic ia l opening of the Banks-Vernon ia Linear State Park, though no date has been set yet. A big Independence Day observance is set for July 4th, with fam ily activities, a bar- beque and, perhaps, a chil dren’s parade. The dav will culm inate in a m agnificent fire w o rk s d isp la y. M ario Leonetti heads the committee that is raising $5,000 for the fireworks. The th e m e fo r A u g u st's Friendship Jamboree will fea ture the centennial in the pa rade and the window decora tions. The Vernonia and Old Grads Society will hold their annual reunion in August, too. Septem ber w ill feature a century of quilt making at the St. Mary’s Quilt Fair, as the quilters display their centenni al contribution. October is still lacking an activity, but there have been suggestions for a community w ide c h ild re n 's H a llo w e en party, or the development of an Oktoberfest. In November, the Vernonia grams; the library is develop ing special displays and pro grams; the museum will hold an open house; the Vernonia Lions w ill sponsor a beard growing contest; a '90s cos tume contest is being consid ered. Sporting events could in clude bicycle racing, horse activities, softball, horseshoe or tennis tournaments, even croquet. The possibilities are end less. Ideas and help are needed to make it a success. The C om m ittee w e lco m es your input and help. The next meeting is tomor row, November 29, at 7 p.m. in the city library. Wilson, Landers win logo contest Robb W ilson of Vernonia was the winner of the Vernon ia Arts & Crafts Society/INDE- PENDENT contest for a cen tennial logo. A $50 prize went to Wilson. Making the selection was m ost d iffic u lt, co m m itte e member Dirk Andersen said, but W ilso n 's d e sig n m ost nearly met the criteria set by the committee. Honorable mentions went to Kristi Usher of Rainier and Dolly Keenon of Vernonia for their fine work. Fourth grader Jason Lan ders was awarded $20 for his entry on the youth level. His design was one of twelve sub m itted by students in Lynn Dougherty's class at Wash ington Grade School. No Jamboree meeting 'til 1991 /J a n u a ry 14th is the date se’f for the Vetnonia Friend ship Jamboree com m ittee’s first planning session for the 1991 celebration. The theme, naturally, w ill be Vernonia's Currants are in!! Get them now for Holiday Baking also Natural Baking Ingredients, C e n te n n ia l, but the exa ct wording hasn't been selected. Where the meeting will be held isn't known at this writ ing, since West Oregon Elec tric has closed th e ir board room to public use and the committee needs to find an other meeting site.
