lu lu 97 IQ Q f l Thn ik in c n c u n r iiT n „ B u s in e s s N o te s Resident manager hired for B-V Linear State Park Joe Paiva, Deputy Director of the Oregon Parks S Recre ation Departm ent has a n nounced the hiring of Eugene Fabryka as full time, resident manager of the newly created Banks-Vernonia Linear State Park Fabryka, his wife Vicki and three year old daughter, have moved into a residence on p ro p e rty a cq u ire d by the parks departm ent near the Buxton trestle In addition to providing a residence for the m anager, the property w ill serve as park headquarters for maintenance and person net Fabryka, a seven year vet eran of O regon Parks & R ecreation, served first at Stewart Park, moving from there to Ecola, then to Fort Stevens as park ranger in 1987. As manager of the Banks Vernonia Linear State Park, he will begin by overseeing construction of the park un der the direction of Max Ruff, m anager of fhe Champoeg District Paiva is the engineer for the project Fabryka's duties will also include general maintenance and public relations which he emphasizes will include the development of a “Friends of the Park" group to support and facilitate its development and use Fabryka sees the park as a unique opportunity and serious challenge Not only is this park the first park of any kind developed within the state system m twenty years, it is also the first park of its kind in the state parks system Linear parks are not new in the United States but are unique in their concept of ere ating long, narrow tra ils Many of them such as Banks Vernonia are rails to trails conversions, utilizing the open spaces ot abandoned railroad rights of way This park will be 16 miles long Fabryka comes well quali tied to the task In addition to his seven years ot experience in the Oregon park system he previously spent five years in the Delaware Parks Depan ment, w orking in diffe re n t parks as a naturalist and as sistan, manager Academically his choice also has merit for this park in eluding a Bachelor of Sci ence degree in park manage ment from West Virginia Uni versify and a Masters in Fdu cation, maioring in environ mental ed ucation In the short time he has been at the B VSLP, he has become enthused about the diversity of the ecology and habitat "I spent a summer at Mt St Helens after the eruption, as an interpreter ot the visual signs ot recovery of fauna and flora." he said.
