Feb 22, 1990, The INDEPENDENT Page 7 Theme and volunteers needed for 1990 Jamboree The Vernonia Friendship Jam boree is, in many re spects, a se lf-organizing sell-perpetuating institution because many ot its compo nents are independent ot each other, yet very much a part of Jamboree The logging show softball tournam ents, church p ro grams, horse gaming show, black powder com petition, children's fishing derby, mutt show, children's games, wrist wrestling, martial arts demon stration and logger breakfast have been established and carried on tor years by virtu ally independent organiza tions New or revived activities are developed and supported by the Jamboree Committee until they also become self- sustaining and independent At present the horseshoe tournament is being revived, u tiliz in g tw elve restored horseshoe pits in Hawkins Park A dram a group is struggling for acceptance in the program, the fast-draw competition will be featured again, as will the old saw ex hibit The Kiddie Carnival needs help to survive be cause youth groups seem re luctant to expend the time and energy needed to make it a profitable activity In addition, there are many potential activities that could utilize the state linear park and Vernonia Lake So, if all of these activities become self perpetuating, why is a Jamboree Commit tee needed9 W ithout the functions the Committee ful fills, there would be no Jam boree Among its functions are • Coordinating the active ties m order to present a co herent program, • Supporting and develop ing new programming. • Raising funds with Con cessions, the Teen Dance Dunk Tank and Souvenirs, for Pi ritans on P rayer prrvn * f h r < inl«k»i frr«aur> «4 IKirtun O ' I k im ilu t h ta m l fira yt' M o I hrr ¡hall all fltih c o m PtoPm <>//A ir U A t 2 Ihaying is ihe same in die new creature as trying is to the natural The child is not learned by art or example to try. but instructed by nature; it tomes into the world try in g Praying is not a lesson got by forms and rules ol art, but Bowing from pnnt iples of new life itself W ll J 1AM G t hs ai i When people do not mind what God speaks to them in His word, God doth as little inind what they say to Him in prayer many necessary expendi tures (The C om m ittee is greatly helped in fund raising by bingo a, the Cedarside Inn ); • Providing accommoda tions tor the Shrmers, clowns and square dance groups. • Handling the logistics of New youth group started at church A new youth group tor stu dents from sixth through ninth grades has been started at the First Christian Church in Vernonia Debbie Curtis will direct the new group which meets Sundays a, 7 p m The high school group continues under the direction of Debbie VonHeeder W e lc o m e A d d itio n s Michael S. Calhoun Michael Steven Calhoun was born January 18 1990. at St Vincent H ospital in Portland The son ot Steve and Carol Calhoun. Vernonia he weighed 9 lbs 9 oz and was 21 inches long at birth Grandparents are Merle and Virginia Leighty ot Chico.
