Sally Banta Gearhart Aug. 5, 1933 – April 12, 2019 Seaside man indicted for arson after allegedly setting garage on fi re By BRENNA VISSER The Daily Astorian A Seaside man who allegedly set a garage on fi re while fl eeing from a car accident earlier this month is facing a fi rst-de- gree arson charge. Moctezuma Garcia, 20, allegedly drove his vehi- cle into a fence on Eighth Avenue in Seaside before fl eeing on foot. During his escape, he allegedly entered some- one’s garage and started a fi re. The homeowner and Garcia appear to have no relationship, said Scott McCracken, the senior deputy district attorney prosecuting the case. Garcia was sent to a Portland-area hospital to treat serious injuries that police believe are self-in- fl icted from the fi re. Garcia has been indicted on fi rst-degree arson, second-degree bur- glary, failure to perform the duties of a driver and two counts of second-de- gree criminal mischief. Sally was born Aug. 5, 1933, in Portland, to Stephen and Harriet (Miller) Honan. She was raised in Seaside, and graduated from Seaside Union High School. During her youth she loved horseback riding and car- ing for her younger siblings. She married John A Banta on May 1, 1954. They started their marriage in Sea- side, and then moved to Gearhart to raise their family. She worked at the Seaside Library, her love of books and people making it the per- fect fi t for her. She retired after 35 years, but never lost her love of books, and was an avid reader. She loved the time spent with her siblings listening to guitar music and singing. They played many competi- tive games of pinochle. Sally and John took their children on many car and camping trips. Later, Sally and John traveled the Northwest exten- sively, as well as several trips to Alaska in their motor home. Sally loved family gath- erings and holidays, Christmas being her favorite. She was most happy when her whole family was together. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 65 years, John; daughters Jane, Susan and Mary; sons John (Jo) and Lee (Teri); eight grandchildren; seven great-grand- children; brother Mike Honan; sister Patri- cia Ross; and numerous nieces and neph- ews, as well as her extended Banta Family. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Connie and Margaret. Visitation was held April 17, at Hughes Ransom Mortuary in Seaside.
