A10 FRIDAY April 26, 2019 Spring Sports SeasideSignal.com Softball Seaside 3, Tillamook 2 Seaside falls to Astoria Seaside Signal The Astoria softball team scored an 11-1 win over Seaside, in Cowapa League action April 18 at CMH Field. The Lady Fishermen highlighted their day with a seven-run fourth inning, in which Emma Biederman had a bases-loaded triple, and scored on an error on the same hit. Astoria pitcher Julia Norris tossed a one-hitter, with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings. She was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. Lexi Lyngstad finished 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Banks 13, Gulls 0 Banks pitchers Kaylin Hernan- dez and Halle Vandomelen combined on a no-hitter April 16 at Broadway Field, where the Braves scored a 13-0 Cowapa League softball win over the Gulls. Hernandez and Vandomelen struck out four batters and walked three in the five-inning game. Banks had 14 hits, with Hannah McCourt going 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Vandomelen was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs. Colin Murphey/Seaside Signal Seaside’s Brayden Johnson dives back to first base to avoid a pickoff attempt. Seaside rallies over Tillamook Seaside Signal Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning — and scoreless over the previous five innings — Seaside scored two runs to defeat Tillamook 3-2 in Cowapa League baseball action April 12 at Broadway Field. In their last at-bat of the day, the Gulls began the bottom of the seventh with three straight singles from Payton Westerholm, Duncan Thompson and Alex Teubner to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change, Seaside’s Isa- ias Jantes laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Westerholm with the tying run. And the Gulls finished it off when Dylan Meyer singled to right field, scoring Thompson with the walk-off, game-win- ning hit. Seaside pitchers Brayden Johnson and Westerholm scattered five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Astoria 6, Gulls 0 There were no late-game rallies this time for the Seaside Gulls, in Clatsop Clash II, which took place April 18 at Broadway Field. The Astoria baseball team made sure of that, as the Fishermen played a flaw- less defensive game for a 6-0 win over the Gulls in a Cowapa League baseball contest. Astoria also gained a little Clatsop Clash payback, after losing an 8-6 deci- sion April 2 to Seaside at CMH Field, when the Gulls overcame a 6-4 deficit with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Fishermen pitcher Dylan Rush never gave the Gulls a chance in Thursday’s rematch, as the junior right-hander scat- tered four hits and struck out seven with two walks in a complete-game victory. The Fishermen gave Rush all the runs he would need with three runs in the third inning. Will Reed led off with a double, the first of five players to reach base safely to start the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Rush and Adam Feldman had back-to-back run-scoring singles, and Ryan Stutznegger scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Ebin Hillard. The Gulls managed to put runners on base, but that’s where they stayed. Seaside’s Payton Westerholm had two doubles, but the Gulls stranded 10 base- runners, including three in the seventh inning when Rush struck out the final bat- ter to end the game. In addition to collecting nine hits in the win, Astoria played error-free defense, Girls Golf with Feldman highlighting the game with several long throws from his third base position to catch runners at first. Offensively, Reed, Feldman and Stutznegger had two hits apiece, including a triple by Stutznegger in the sixth inning, in which Seaside turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Banks 9, Gulls 2 Hayden Vandehey was a one-man wrecking crew, and the Banks Braves took advantage of a seven-run fourth inning to defeat Seaside 9-2 in a Cowapa League baseball April 17 at Banks. Vandehey was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over four innings, and helped his cause by driving in three runs with two doubles. The Gulls rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the fourth, as Justin Morris drew a one-out walk, Travis Fenton singled to right, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Gage McFadden. Morris scored on an infield single by Payton Westerholm to tie the game, 2-2. But the next seven runs belonged to the Braves, whose seven-run fourth inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Vandehey for an eventual 9-2 lead. Westerholm and Duncan Thompson had two hits apiece for the Gulls. The match at the Astoria Golf & Country Club was played with a modified sta- bleford scoring, with golfers and teams earning points. Valley Catholic also had the top two scoring golf- ers for the day, with Challin Kim topping the field with 59 points, followed by teammate Annmarie Gallardo with 52. Astoria senior Samantha Hemsley was a close third with 50 points, and teammate Jenna Travers racked up 46 points for fourth. The Valiants were able to compile 194 team points, with the Lady Fishermen (131) a distant second. Sea- side was third with 92 points. Also competing were Ilwaco (90), Molalla (80) and Scappoose (70). Golfers from North Marion and Tilla- mook also took part, but had incomplete teams. Seaside Signal Gary Henley/Seaside Signal Seaside golfer Tristyn McFadden tees off on the second hole of the recent Astoria Invitational. Two teams expected to battle for the 4A boys golf state championship in May met on the course for the first time in 2019, April 18 at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell. In a four-team tourna- ment, Marist got the team victory, firing a 312 team score. Seaside shot a 332, as the Gulls — for the first time this season — did not come away with the first- place trophy. In fairness to Seaside, the Gulls were competing in their second tournament in two days, while Marist was playing on its home course. The Spartans won the Class 5A state champion- ship last season (and now compete at the 4A level), while the Gulls finished ahead of 5A Churchill (347) and 6A Sheldon (371). All in all, not a bad day for the Gulls. “We learned a few things today,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “We learned that it is physically and mentally draining to play back-to-back competitive rounds. We also learned that Marist is a very good team and will be tough to beat on their home turf. “At the same time, we learned a little about the course and what we need to shoot to compete come May,” he said of the course that will host the state tour- nament. “While (the Spar- tans) got us by quite a few strokes today, I don’t think they shot anything we are incapable of matching.” SEASIDE SPORTS SUPERFANS SEASIDE WELLNESS CENTER Mental Health Therapy Children, Adolescents, and Adults 503.717.5284 seasidewellnesscenter.net CCB# 205283 Best of luck this Season!
