10A FRIDAY Sept. 28, 2018 Fall Sports SeasideSignal.com Athletes FOOTBALL OF THE WEEK Gulls wallop Fishermen 55-7 SEASIDE WINS A CLATSOP SMASH GUILFORD COLLEGE By Gary Henley Seaside Signal LIZZY BARNES Soccer T he Astoria Fishermen have been playing some top-notch football this month, with a come-from-behind win over Stayton and a narrow loss to previously No. 1-ranked Estacada. But, as actor Dennis Quaid said in “The Right Stuff,” ... “Now hold on there … YOU are looking at a whole new ball game here.” That’s how it was for the Fishermen Sept. 21, as Astoria paid a visit to Broadway Field to face the mighty Seaside Gulls. The new No. 1-ranked Gulls dominated from start to finish in a 55-7 win over Astoria in a Cowapa League opener. It took an average of just three plays to score on each of Seaside’s eight scoring drives (with two one-play scoring drives), and the Gulls rolled up 329 yards of total of- fense on the rain-slickened turf. Nine of their 13 drives began on Astoria’s half of the field, as the Seaside defense limit- ed the Fishermen to just nine first downs (one in the second half), and 67 yards rushing. It took less than five minutes for the Gulls to score all the points they would need. Seaside drove 58 yards in five plays for its first score, a short pass from Payton Wester- holm to Alexander Teubner, which Teubner turned into a 41-yard touchdown. Astoria’s nightmare start continued when the Fishermen were forced to punt on their first possession. A mishandled snap on the punt was recovered by the Gulls at the As- toria 20-yard line, and Duncan Thompson scored on the very next play for a 14-0 lead. It took the Gulls four plays to score on their third possession, a 10-yard TD pass from Westerholm to Teubner. Teubner caught two passes (both for touchdowns) and rushed for 115 yards on 15 carries, while Thompson ran six times for 77 yards, adding TD runs of 23 and 35 yards. Astoria’s lone score came in the second quarter, when Bo Williams tossed a 29-yard touchdown to Ian Hunt. Westerholm completed three passes for 67 yards and ran for a 38-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Seaside had 17 first downs, but was penal- ized 13 times for 125 yards. Astoria lost four of its five fumbles. Barnes is in her sophomore year at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. A midfielder for Guilford’s soccer team, Barnes had her first assist of the season in a 2-0 win over Piedmont International Univer- sity Sept. 19. She played a long pass near midfield to an open Katie Kaznowski, who scored for the two-goal lead. Barnes has played in all six games for the Quakers this season. Both teams played hard, but those are the breaks of the game, as the Fishermen and Gulls literally expe- rienced the thrill of victory and the agony of da-feet, respectively. “We got lucky. We were fortu- nate,” said Astoria coach Tim Fas- tabend, whose team won for the first time in four games. The Fishermen started the season 2-1, which was fol- lowed by two ties and a loss. “It was nice to see how we hung in there,” Fastabend said. “The girls have played hard. It’s just the final third (of the field) where we have trouble finishing. Seaside plugged up the middle tonight and it took us awhile.” The Gulls scored in the ninth min- ute, when Katie Zagata took a shot from 20 yards out at the right post, crossing a shot that banged off the GARY HENLEY/SEASIDE SIGNAL Katie Zagata, right, accepts congratulations from teammate Audrey Kunde following Zagata’s goal in the Clatsop Clash soccer game. left post and into the net. That was the only goal of the first half, which featured just four shots on goal. The first 37 minutes of the second half was similar — good defense, and not much offense. Astoria’s Nara Van De Grift, Maddie Sisley and Andrea Harris were busy on the defensive end for the Fishermen, while Sea- side’s Maddy Brown, Audrey Kunde, Jessica Angulo-Joli, Annaka Gar- hofer and Suzy Velasquez were all stopping Fishermen attacks. At 77:02 into the game, Asto- ria scored on a goal from Meghan O’Meara, off a pass from Taileigh Cole, with the ball going through Elle Espelien. And just over a minute later, the Fishermen struck again with the game-winner, as a corner kick from O’Meara was headed into the net by Espelien. SEASIDE SPORTS SUPERFANS Go Gulls!
