10A FRIDAY Dec. 8, 2017 Fall Sports SeasideSignal.com GIRLS BASKETBALL SWIMMING LADY GULLS EXTEND WINNING STREAK Shipley scores a first Seaside Signal laying their first game of the post-Maddi Utti era, the Seaside girls basketball team did not miss a beat Friday night at the Gulls’ Nest, where the Lady Gulls extended their unbeat- en streak to 16 games with a 48-25 win over Gladstone. Undefeated at home last year, Seaside has not lost a game on its home court since Jan. 26, 2016. And in their first contest without Utti (now playing at Fresno State) in four years, the Gulls scored by committee. Emy Kiser led Seaside with 12 points, followed by Annaka Garhofer with nine. Bryre Babbitt and Jetta Ideue chipped in eight apiece. Anesha Smart added six, as sev- en Gulls made the scoring column. “Well, if a positive vision can become re- ality, this game was about as close as I could imagine,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “We played hard, kept the turnovers in con- trol, and ran and gunned fairly well.” The season-opening win was a “good first outing, with contributions from every- one,” he said. “Great floor games by Jetta and Bryre. Emy did solid, Annaka hit some threes and Anesha played her best varsity game.” Defensively, the Gulls had nine steals and held the Gladiators to just 10 total points through three quarters. Seaside was hot from the field, hitting 19- of-56 field goal attempts, including 7-of-24 from the 3-point line. Babbitt added 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. EO Media Group P TILLAMOOK — Sea- side’s Josh Shipley placed first in the 200-yard individu- al medley (2:18.60), and also won the 100-yard freestyle in 53.75, almost four seconds ahead of Astoria’s Ryder Dopp at the Tillamook Invitational. The Astoria boys swim team finished first among Cowapa League teams and second overall Saturday, Dec. 9. Newport took first in the team standings with 397 points, followed by Astoria (226) and Taft (215), in an eight-team field that included Scappoose, Valley Catholic, Seaside (seventh) and Tilla- mook. The Astoria girls placed third behind Tillamook and Newport. The Astoria boys highlight- ed their meet by taking second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Cole Beeson, Thayne Co- vert, Elias Simmons and Ryder Dopp teamed up to finish in 1 minute, 41.74 seconds, behind Newport. Elsewhere, Davis Wingard placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke, ahead of team- mate Aleks Matthews. On the girls’ side, Astoria’s Jazzy King, a transfer from Roseburg, had the highest in- dividual finish for the Lady Fishermen, placing second in the 50-yard freestyle (28.0) out of 66 entries. In the relays, the Astoria girls (freshmen Tori Smith and Grace Peeler, and seniors Me- gan Schacher and King) took second in 200-yard freestyle (1:57.51) and third in 200-yard medley. Smith added third-place finishes in the individual med- ley and 100-yard butterfly; and Peeler was third in the breast- stroke.
