November 24, 2017 • Seaside Signal • seasidesignal.com • 7A Iron Chef Goes Coastal raises $60K EO Media Group The 10th annual Iron Chef Goes Coastal, a fundraiser for the United Way of Clat- sop County held Nov. 7 at the Seaside Convention Center, raised a record $60,000. The event sold out and attracted 650 attendees, orga- nizers said. John Sowa, from Sweet Basils, and Jeff Martin, from Silver Salmon Grille, pre- vailed over Jonathan Hoff- man, of Chef’s Table and Dough Dough Bakery, and Josh Bokish, from Osprey Café. The money will be invest- ed into 14 partner agencies “who fight for the health and safety of every person in Clat- sop County,” Jennifer Holen, executive director of United Way of Clatsop County, said in a release. The chefs and restau- rants that participated in the people’s choice savory and dessert made for a tough competition, Holen noted, but only two will advance to next year’s stage to compete against and alongside this year’s winners. The top two votes went to Maggie’s on the Prom and Fort George Brewery. Sea Star Gelato, in Seaside, won Best Desserts in Clatsop County. ADVERTISING ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS HERE! TIRE Trial set for man tied to alcohol in teen’s death Teen died after running onto Highway 101 By Jack Heffernan EO Media Group A trial date has been set for a Warrenton man who alleged- ly provided alcohol to a teen who died in January after run- ning onto U.S. Highway 101. Richard Edward Reinsch, 48, allegedly gave alcohol to Trevor Secord, 15, the night he was struck and killed by a pickup truck just north of Gearhart. Reinsch was charged in August with two Richard counts of fur- nishing alco- Edward hol to a per- Reinsch son under 21, with one of the counts stem- ming from a separate case. He pleaded not guilty at the time. At a hearing Thursday, Nov. 9, a trial date was set for May. Reinsch has been convict- ed twice for burglary and once for driving under the influence of intoxicants. In late January, after a night of drinking, Secord got out of a vehicle parked on the shoul- der and started running in the middle of the highway near milepost 17, Oregon State Po- lice said. He was pronounced dead soon after emergency personnel responded to the crash. Secord’s family demand- ed an investigation into who provided alcohol to the former Warrenton High School foot- ball player. Brenda McKune, Secord’s grandmother, said he and oth- er Warrenton teens have regu- larly hung out with adults who buy alcohol for them. She said she reported issues to police about 10 times in the last two to three years but came away from the discussions feeling disappointed. “Too many people are afraid to stand up and protect our children,” McKune said. “This whole thing is sickening to me.” Despite her complaints, she said Warrenton police re- peatedly told her their investi- gations would be much easier if the teenagers reported the alleged crimes themselves. Police must have probable cause and a search warrant be- fore entering a home to check for underage drinking unless given permission by the occu- pant. “Catching it happening in the process is very diffi- cult,” Warrenton Police Chief Mathew Workman said. McKune last saw her grandson at a grocery store just hours before he died. He was purchasing orange juice, which she now believes he was attempting to mix with Everclear — a highly potent brand of grain alcohol. Once again, McKune re- ported her concerns to police. Secord died, as his grand- mother recalls, 3 hours and 12 minutes after she made the complaint. Months later, McKune is still concerned about a culture in which adults supply alcohol to Warrenton teenagers.
