10A FRIDAY Nov. 10, 2017 Fall Sports SeasideSignal.com Gulls land all-league selections SOCCER DRAMATIC LOSS Seaside Signal No. 1 ranked Gulls knocked out in final seconds of quarterfinals League champion Scappoose and second-place Seaside garnered most of the awards and selections to the Cowapa All-League football team, announced last week. The league had three Offensive Players of the Year — senior Jim- my Jones of Scappoose, and juniors Hayden Vandehey of Banks and Alex Teubner of Seaside. Sean McNabb of Scappoose and Seaside’s Jeff Roberts were named Coaches of the Year; and Ross Par- son of Scappoose was the lone De- fensive Player of the Year. The Indians had seven selections to the first-team offense and five on defense; while Seaside had six first- team offense players, and three first- team defense. The Gulls had all five of their offensive linemen earn all-league honors, along with two tight ends, a running back, a wide receiver, and junior Payton Westerholm was one of three first-team quarterbacks. Seaside also landed three line- backers on the all-league team. By Gary Henley Seaside Signal he 2017 Seaside boys soccer team spent most of the season ranked in the top three at the 4A level, and opened the state playoffs as the No. 1-ranked team in the state. But the No. 1 seed didn’t help Seaside the night of Nov. 4 at Broadway Field, where Newport’s Romario Mendoza scored with just 41 seconds remaining in regulation, giv- ing the Cubs a 2-1 win over the Gulls in the state quarterfinal contest. Even more impressive for Newport — the Cubs played the final 18 minutes with just 10 players. The loss snapped a 10-game win streak for the Gulls, who had given up just two goals since Sept. 26. “I’m disappointed, yes, but what a tremen- dous year we’ve had,” said Seaside coach John Chapman. “We win league, we had nine shutouts this year. We played and competed against 5A teams, beating Hillsboro (4-1) and played to a 0-0 tie with Corvallis until the last minute of an overtime game. “So the boys played well. Soccer’s a fun- ny old game. You just don’t know how the ball’s going to bounce, and tonight it bounced with the weather for Newport. Best of luck to them.” The Cubs had the wind and rain at their back in the second half, but Seaside had the weather in the first half, and led 1-0 at half- time. After 39 scoreless minutes, Seaside’s Ir- ving Contreras hammered a shot past New- port goalkeeper Luis Reyes from 20 yards out, with just 49 seconds left in the first half. Newport senior Ricardo Gonza- lez-Vazquez scored the equalizer in the 50th minute (29:34 remaining in the second half), after Seaside keeper James Petie was issued a yellow card, resulting in a close-range free T COLIN MURPHEY/EO MEDIA GROUP Colton Carter takes a shot at the goal for the Seaside Seagulls during Saturday’s playoff game against Newport. kick for the Cubs. And Gonzalez-Vazquez converted to tie the game. The next major play was a yellow card assessed to Newport’s Julian Elizalde with 17:42 remaining. It was the second yellow card issued to Elizalde, who argued the point with an offi- cial and was given a red card, forcing New- port to play the rest of the match with just 10 players. But the Cubs’ 11th man was the wind, and the two teams battled evenly for most of the second half. With under a minute remaining, Newport worked the ball into the left corner, centered a pass for Mendoza, who drilled a shot past a diving Petie with just 41 seconds left. “We knew that if we got to see Newport, it was going to be tooth and nail,” Chapman SPONSORED BY: FOOTBALL Receiving: Johnson 3-94, Blanchard 2-76, Thompson 2-34, Landwehr 1-19, Teubner 1-11. Volleyball said of the defending 4A state champions. “The weather, obviously, came on in the sec- ond half, which was a bit of an advantage for Newport. “We defended well, we were scrappy, and that last free kick by Newport — if you look back — that’s when they score. They often find that lucky one in the net, near the end of the game.” The Gulls finish 13-2-1, one of the best seasons in school history. The 13 wins sur- passed the 11 victories Seaside had in 2000, ‘03, ‘09 and ‘15. “Our boys should be very proud of a very successful season,” Chapman said. “We’re losing three guys from the field (seniors Colton Carter, Henry Chapman and Rafi Si- bony), so we have a lot of young guys com- ing back. I can’t see anything but another suc- cessful year for Seaside.” T: Brian Rieger, Jr., Tillamook T: Parker Moore, Sr., Seaside T: Jeff Stutznegger, Sr., Astoria T: Walker Copley, So., Banks C: Tommy McKedy, So., Scappoose C: Travis Fenton, Jr., Seaside G: Isaias Jantes, Jr., Seaside G: Michael Bailey, Sr., Seaside G: Nate Maller, Sr., Scappoose TE: Blake Gobel, Jr., Banks RB: Jimmy Jones, Sr., Scappoose RB: Jack Eggers, Sr., Scappoose RB: Trey Eberhart, So., Valley Catholic RB: Alex Teubner, Jr., Seaside QB: Hayden Vandehey, Jr., Banks QB: Jerad Toman, Sr., Scappoose QB: Payton Westerholm, Jr., Seaside K: Benji Davidson, Sr., Scappoose First Team Defense DL: Kenny Kramer, Sr., Tillamook DL: Max Merritt, Sr., Banks DL: Ben Carpenter, Jr., Astoria DL: Trey Bispham, Sr., Scappoose LB: Ross Parsons, Sr., Scappoose LB: Matt Roth, Jr., Scappoose LB: Isaac Hendrickson, Sr., Valley Catholic LB: Austin Weeks, Sr., Tillamook LB: Gio Ramirez, Jr., Seaside Gulls fall short in wild game at Broadway LB: Duncan Thompson, Jr., Seaside LB: Gunnar Partain, Sr., Banks LB: Balon Kolee, Jr., Astoria DB: Jimmy Jones, Sr., Scappoose DB: Jake Gray, Sr., Scappoose DB: Chris Silveira, Jr., Tillamook DB: Alex Teubner, Jr., Seaside DB: Trey Hageman, Sr., Astoria DB: Zac Patterson, Sr., Astoria P: Andrew Schauermann, Sr., Astoria Second Team Offense T: Paxson VanNortwick, Jr., Seaside TE: Cameron King, Sr., Seaside TE: Dawson Blanchard, Sr., Seaside WR: Brayden Johnson, So., Seaside Honorable Mention Defense LB: Skyler Yoshino, Sr., Seaside DB: Garrett Kiser, Sr., Seaside “This really stings,” he said of the loss. “But Henley’s a good foot- ball team. I thought we would do a little better defensively, especially having defended Banks so well, but (the Hornets’) kids up front are really good, and we got beat up a little up front.” Henley coach Alex Stork stat- ed, “I have to give a lot of credit to Seaside. That is a talented ball club, and they have some guys with character and heart. Absolute- ly first class. The whole program — coaching staff and every single player.” As always, Roberts delivered a good message to his players fol- lowing the game. “I told them (the loss) isn’t go- ing to define who they are for the rest of their lives,” he said. “You can work your tail off and do ev- erything right, but sometimes you just don’t come out ahead.” By Gary Henley Seaside Signal After a combined 1,080 yards in total offense, 47 first downs and five lead changes the final differ- ence on the scoreboard was just four points Nov. 3 at Broadway Field. In a game that fans and players on both sides will not soon forget, the Hornets drove 98 yards in the final three minutes and scored on a 15-yard pass from Kyle Hadwick to Gabe Young with 20 seconds left for the winning points. The players were spent physi- cally after 48 hard-fought minutes, and the fans were equally exhaust- ed after one of the craziest games in Broadway Field history. “We ran into a good team to- night,” said Seaside coach Jeff Rob- erts, whose team finishes 6-3, and second place in the Cowapa League.
