June 9, 2017 • Seaside Signal • seasidesignal.com • 3A Legion reaches out to honor area vets Sen. Johnson seeks fair share of lottery funds By R.J. Marx Seaside Signal Jan Jackson of the Seaside Elks recalled a time when America marked graves with flags and “spilled our tears upon the ground, in memory of those whose courage and valor led to their death.” Known as Decoration Day, the ceremony evolved into Memorial Day, observed in communi- ties large and small throughout the nation. Jackson, who was named Oregon’s Elk Officer of the Year at the organization’s April convention in Seaside, was introduced by American Legion Post 99 Cmdr. Steve Gibson at Monday’s legion event. Supporting veterans Along with remembering our nation’s fallen, the event put a spotlight on veterans’ affairs legisla- tion in Oregon. The biggest concern is making sure the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs is fully funded, keynote speaker state Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose, said before the formal ceremony. She said Gov. Kate Brown’s budget fails to add voter-approved lottery funds intended for veterans’ services to the base level of support. “The veterans were of the mind that we should have gotten our base support plus what the voters gave us,” Johnson said. “One doesn’t substitute for the other.” The 1.5 percent of state lottery funds to be set aside by voters after passage of Measure 96 in No- vember could reach $28 million, Johnson said. Funds could be used to help veterans access health care or housing, along with employment, education and treatment programs. COLIN MURPHEY/EO MEDIA GROUP Members of the American Legion Riders salute the flag as part of a Memorial Day ceremony held in Seaside. Boy Scouts Marilyn Falker of Seaside’s American Legion Auxiliary sought public support for veterans’ assis- tance and rehabilitation programs. She invited do- nations of lap robes, afghans and personal comfort items, including leftover fabric used to knit 4-foot- by-5-foot lap robes or slightly larger afghans. Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermer- horn, acting in his capacity as assistant scoutmaster of Troop 642, called the Seaside Legion’s Memo- rial Day observance a “great event for the boys.” “We come around 9; we help set the tent and the chairs up,” Schermerhorn said. “It’s good for them to give back to those who fought for their country.” Scout Toby Tackitt said he was inspired by a member of his family who served in the Marines. Schermerhorn’s son, Jackson, was among the Scouts. “My grandfather was in the Navy and my great-grandfather was in the military,” Jackson Schermerhorn said with pride.
