Marx Man in standoff accepts plea deal Seaside Signal By Jack Heff ernan A kitchen fi re Sunday at 2:10 p.m. led to the death of a family dog, a Rhodesian ridge- back, most likely from smoke inhalation, Gearhart Fire Chief Bill Eddy said Monday morning. Fire offi cials received a call at a sin- gle-story residential home at 1368 Garden Terrace Road Sunday. Upon arrival, fl ames were showing from the front window. After a quick knockdown of the main fi re by the fi rst crew, teams fought the blaze until 3:20 p.m. after a wood- en cutting board caught fi re atop a gas stove, starting the blaze, Eddy said. Seaside Fire assisted with coverage at Gearhart station. No fi refi ghters were in- jured and no one was home at the time of the fi re. However, the family dog perished in the fi re, most likely from smoke inhalation, Eddy said. Attempts to resuscitate the dog by fi refi ghters were unsuccessful. The home, a full-time family residence, is unlivable as a result of smoke and heat damage. Structural damage and comments could reach $50,000 to $80,000, Eddy said. EO Media Group SUBMITTED PHOTO Gearhart and Seaside fi refi ghters responded to a blaze Sunday in Gearhart. The Seaside man involved in a standoff with police in January reached a plea deal in April with the Clatsop County District Attorney’s Offi ce, agreeing to supervised probation. Brian Wallin, 49, locked himself inside his home on Whispering Pines Drive for nearly 64 hours. He fi red a number of shots before surren- dering to police. Wallin’s mother exited the home uninjured shortly after the standoff began. He shot and killed the family dog during the standoff. Wallin was later indicted on six counts of un- lawful use of a weapon, seven counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of fi rst degree aggravated animal abuse. He pleaded no contest to one count of unlawful use of a weapon, one count of aggravated animal abuse in the fi rst degree and two counts of recklessly endangering another person. In addition to three years of supervised proba- tion, Wallin agreed to serve 90 days in jail with credit for time served and treatment court with a mental health evaluation. He also agreed to forfeit all weapons and not care for animals for 15 years.
