And all it took was one big inning for the Gulls, who rallied from a 5-1 deficit with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to record their second victory of the season. Cascade outhit the Gulls (9 to 7), but the Cougars also committed four errors, while Sea- side played flawless defense. Offensively, nine different players scored runs for the Gulls. Brent Walsh got the start on the mound for the Gulls, who trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the third. Ashton Boyd scored on a single by Duncan Thompson for Seaside’s first run. After a scoreless fourth, the Gulls erupted for their biggest inning of the young season. The rally started with one out, when Payton Westerholm reached first on a dropped ball- third strike. The Gulls followed with three consecutive singles, from Thompson, Walsh and Dawson Blanchard. Otto Hoekstre was hit by a pitch and Gage McFadden drew a walk, and Isaiah Jantes singled to right. Hoekstre scored on a wild pitch and Mc- Fadden sprinted home on an error to give Sea- side a 7-5 lead. Jantes later scored on a wild pitch, and Astor Landwehr came in on a single by Thompson for the final run. It was the second loss in a row for the Cou- gars, who dropped a 13-12 decision to Molalla just the day before. The Gulls opened their season at home March 16 against Molalla, in a single game at Broadway Field. And the Gulls got off to a great start, scoring two runs in their first at-bat, but the Indians ral- lied with eight runs over the final five innings for an 8-2 victory over Seaside. Molalla sophomore pitcher Analiz Wickham was the player of the day for the Indians, as she went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Wickham threw 90 pitches for the complete-game win. Alyssa Goin and Sidney Owsley had the only two hits for Seaside, while Sequoia Shand drove in both runs. Emily Evanson and Alicia Schultz each had two hits for Molalla. Seaside returned to action a week later, when the Gulls hosted Corbett in a nonleague game March 23. The Cardinals held a 3-1 lead after two in- nings, then scored six in the fourth on their way to an 11-1, five-inning win. Tessa McAllister highlighted Corbett’s big inning with a home run, while Lindsey Flegel added a double. Corbett pitchers Abby Fritz and Kara Moritz combined to strike out seven, with four walks and three hits allowed. Seaside’s Jetta Ideue got her first start of the year, and allowed 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and six walks. Lucy Bodner had a double and scored a run for the Gulls, while GeriAnn Klaffke drove in the lone Seaside run. Warrenton 267 0x—15 10 0 WP: Niqui Blodgett (7 K’s, 3 walks). Gulls host Ice-Breaker By Gary Henley Seaside Signal The Astoria and Seaside track teams, among others, “broke the ice” on the 2017 season March 15, in the annual Seaside Ice-Breaker Meet at Seaside High School. Coming off the recently com- pleted basketball season, the Gulls were nowhere near full strength, while certain events were not run because of poor weather condi- tions. It still gave the Fishermen and Gulls a chance for some of their 2017 hopefuls to stretch their legs for a jump on the new season. A few familiar names came through with the top times. Astoria’s sister tandem of Gra- cie and Natalie Cummings finished first and second, respectively in the 100 meters; while Seaside senior Juneau Meyer won the 100 and 400 meters. Seaside’s foursome of Wesley Corliss, Levi Card, James Kennedy and Meyer won the 400-meter re- lay in 47.59 seconds, while senior Phoenix Johnson — who competed for Clatskanie last year — made a successful debut with the Gulls’ track team, winning the boys’ long jump with a leap of 19 feet, three- and-a-half inches, a personal best.
