Seaside moves to state playoffs
E
STACADA — The Seaside Lady
Gulls showed just how strong
Cowapa League volleyball re-
ally is, in a match at Estacada,
Saturday, Oct. 22. With three
Cowapa League teams ranked in the top five
of the latest OSAA RPI state rankings, the
Gulls are ranked 16th, despite a 2-8 league
record. And Seaside took its No. 16 ranking
to 17th-ranked Estacada, and scored a four-
game win over the Rangers, 17-25, 25-23,
25-16, 25-22.
With the victory, Seaside advances to the
state playoffs for the first time since 2005,
when the Gulls defeated Cascade in a state
playoff and took part in the state tournament,
where they defeated North Bend, followed
by losses to Henley and La Grande. The
Gulls will play a road match Saturday, with
the winner advancing to the Class 4A state
tournament, Nov. 4-5 at Forest Grove High
School. There will be five Cowapa League
teams (Valley Catholic, Tillamook, Banks,
Seaside and Scappoose) in the Sweet 16.
Maddi Utti pounded out 26 kills with a
.317 hitting percentage, while Alyssia Gon-
zales added eight kills. Middle blocker Nik-
ki Mercado chipped in with six kills, and
Kennedy helped the Seaside
boys soccer team clinch a sec-
ond place finish in the Cowapa
League standings Oct. 18, assist-
ing Colton Carter on the game’s
first goal. The senior forward/
midfielder has played a big role
in helping the Gulls to another
post-season appearance.

Tori Tomlin had five. “Our setters, (Annaka)
Garhofer and (Anna) Huddleston, are young
and they’ve done a great job,” said Seaside
coach Angie Huntsman. “They’re both hard
workers and I’m excited about the growth
I’m seeing in each of them in different ar-
eas.”
Defensively, Jetta Ideue led the Gulls
with 23 digs. Utti and Gonzales each con-
tributed 15 digs, Lucy Bodner had 10 and
Garhofer added nine. Ideue was also 94 per-
cent from the service line and Huddleston,
Garhofer and Gonzales each contributed two
aces at crucial times, Huntsman said.

Seaside Signal
A
slippery football and muddy
conditions led to some early
turnovers by Seaside, which
led to a big lead for Banks Friday,
Oct. 21, in a Cowapa League regu-
lar season finale. The Gulls finished
the season 2-6 overall.
The Braves took advantage of
Seaside miscues to build a 21-0
halftime lead, on their way to a
34-6 win over the Gulls.
Banks senior Milo Applebee
had a pair of touchdown runs in the
first half, the second with 34 sec-
onds left in the second quarter.
Seaside’s Cameron King kept
the Gulls competitive with a few
big runs and pass receptions on of-
fense, as well as some big tackles
on defense that ended drives for the
Braves.
Banks answered with two
scores in the third quarter, a touch-
down pass from Jake Evans to
Gunnar Partain, and a 34-yard run
by Hayden Vandehey.
The Gulls scored their first
points with 11:51 left in the fourth
quarter on a long run by Alex Teub-
ner.
