Seaside moves to state playoffs E STACADA — The Seaside Lady Gulls showed just how strong Cowapa League volleyball re- ally is, in a match at Estacada, Saturday, Oct. 22. With three Cowapa League teams ranked in the top five of the latest OSAA RPI state rankings, the Gulls are ranked 16th, despite a 2-8 league record. And Seaside took its No. 16 ranking to 17th-ranked Estacada, and scored a four- game win over the Rangers, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22. With the victory, Seaside advances to the state playoffs for the first time since 2005, when the Gulls defeated Cascade in a state playoff and took part in the state tournament, where they defeated North Bend, followed by losses to Henley and La Grande. The Gulls will play a road match Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Class 4A state tournament, Nov. 4-5 at Forest Grove High School. There will be five Cowapa League teams (Valley Catholic, Tillamook, Banks, Seaside and Scappoose) in the Sweet 16. Maddi Utti pounded out 26 kills with a .317 hitting percentage, while Alyssia Gon- zales added eight kills. Middle blocker Nik- ki Mercado chipped in with six kills, and Kennedy helped the Seaside boys soccer team clinch a sec- ond place finish in the Cowapa League standings Oct. 18, assist- ing Colton Carter on the game’s first goal. The senior forward/ midfielder has played a big role in helping the Gulls to another post-season appearance. The Gulls finished the season 2-6 overall. The Braves took advantage of Seaside miscues to build a 21-0 halftime lead, on their way to a 34-6 win over the Gulls. Banks senior Milo Applebee had a pair of touchdown runs in the first half, the second with 34 sec- onds left in the second quarter. Seaside’s Cameron King kept the Gulls competitive with a few big runs and pass receptions on of- fense, as well as some big tackles on defense that ended drives for the Braves. Banks answered with two scores in the third quarter, a touch- down pass from Jake Evans to Gunnar Partain, and a 34-yard run by Hayden Vandehey. The Gulls scored their first points with 11:51 left in the fourth quarter on a long run by Alex Teub- ner.
