Obituaries Maryon Whitten Greenough James Smith May 20, 1919 — March 20, 2015 Maryon Whitten Gree- nough, 95, of Gearhart, died on March 20, 2015. Maryon was born in Port- land May 20, 1919, to William and Marea Whit- ten. She spent her child- hood in Portland, grad- uating from Grant High School and moving on to Oregon State College, where she graduated with a degree in home eco- nomics. It was there that she met Harrison Gree- nough, whom she married in 1942. Beginning their life together in Seattle, Har- rison worked for Boeing and she at Crescent Spice during World War II. While at Crescent, Mary- on had a radio show as “Maryon Bell,” where she offered creative cooking ideas that dealt with war- time rationing. After the war, Maryon and Harrison moved to Gearhart, where they spent the rest of their lives. Harrison worked for the E. H. Carruthers Co. as they raised their chil- dren; William, Mary and Thomas. Maryon’s great joy then, and throughout her life, was cooking for fam- ily and friends and all the neighborhood kids. She loved crossword puzzles, MARYON GREENOUGH and had considerable suc- cess at winning contests of the era that required clever writing of slogans and the like. After the “nest emptied,” Maryon began a career as a home economics teacher at Sea- side High School, where she spent 17 of her hap- piest years devising new classes and truly enjoying her students, who remem- ber her fondly to this day. She used her summers to gain a master’s degree and, for several years as- sisted chef and author, James Beard, with cook- ing classes celebrating Oregon’s bounty. Maryon was a mem- ber of Calvary Episco- pal Church and Saint Anne’s Guild in Seaside for almost 70 years. She worked with the League of Woman’s Voters, was a Cub Scout den mother and was on the board of directors of the Seaside Library. She also volun- teered with United Way, SMART and, with Har- rison, Meals on Wheels. Maryon was a longtime member of the Astoria Country Club, where she enjoyed occasional golf, bridge and especially lunching with a group of friends nicknamed “The Desserters.” Maryon Greenough was preceded in death by her husband Harrison, and her eldest son William. She is survived by her daughter Mary and husband Jack Kerwin, son Thomas and wife Donna, and grand- children Jennifer, Nathan, Nicholas and Sue, great grandchildren Alejandro, Mateo and Sean, and great niece Joey. Services will be held at 11 a.m. April 11 at Calva- ry Episcopal Church, 503 N. Holladay Drive in Sea- side. In lieu of flowers, Maryon wished that do- nations be made to the Seaside Library, Calvary Episcopal Church or the Seaside High School Cu- linary Arts Department. Nancy Lee Grimberg Sept. 22, 1928 — March 23, 2015 Nancy Lee Grimberg was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Portland, Ore., to Ole and Nettie (Lokan) Nel- son. She spent her early years on a homestead in Birkenfeld, then Clats- kanie, and moved to As- toria at the age of 10. Nancy resided in Astoria until the end of her life. She had so much love for this place. She graduated from Astoria High School in 1946, attended Oregon State University for a year, and majored in fash- ion design. In 1954, Nancy mar- ried Stanford Grimberg in Astoria. Five years later their only child was born, a daughter they named Ann. Stan and Nancy re- mained together until his death, caused by meso- thelioma, in 1982. Nancy spent a total of 23 years working for The Daily Astorian in the ad- vertising department. In 1976, she went to work with Stan at the new busi- ness he had established, Astoria Plumbing. Nan- cy ran the business until retirement in 2000. She spent years volunteering at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Asto- ria Column, and SMART NANCY GRIMBERG Reading Program. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 60 years, VASA Lodge, and the Elks, where she rarely missed Friday night bingo. Nancy was a gift- ed seamstress, and will fondly be remembered for altering every item of clothing she ever owned. She had a tenacity that few could match. She was passionate about jobs and industry. She never hesitated to pick up the phone, or write a strongly worded letter to support a cause that she believed in. Nancy was generous and had a sense of humor. She kept that sense of hu- mor until the very end. Spending time with her great grandson Keegan, brought her much joy. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Ann Sam- uelson and son-in-law, David Samuelson, of Jewell; her nephew, John Nelson of Eugene; her granddaughters, Kristin Samuelson of Portland and Sarah Samuelson of Chandler, Ariz.; and her great-grandson, Keegan McCleary of Portland. Nancy’s companion, Mar- vin Mathre of Seaside, also survives. She was preceded in death by husband, Stan Grimberg; brother Gene Nelson; and lifelong friend, Sue (Kearney) Haskins.
