SERVICE IS VERY IMPRESSIVE With Houston's opera house well tilled, Klamatb Fulls Lodge No. 1847 Beuuvolrut mid Protective Order of Elks, held services Huuday evening, coiuiiK'iiiorutiiig the departed mem bers ot the order. In escaping the sadness of losing membcis, Klamath Ends Lodge was especially fortunáis this year. In the two preceding years one member In each year uusworcd the summons of the Ureal Ruler. Members of the lodge marched In a body from their hull to the opera house. In addition to the ritualistic progrum. other Interesting numbers wero given. "The Heart Bow'd Down" was beautifully rendered by Mrs. Don J. Zumwalt, and a quartet, composed of Mrs. Zumwalt, Mrs K.It.Hamilton, Ln wren «e Mehaffcy und Harold Kin- near, sung "Just a Bong at Twilight" In un expressive manner. The eulogy, a beautiful word picture, was given by Herbert 8. Hale. The principal address, given by Hon. II. F Mulkey of Medford, proved to I mi u most beautiful tribute to the departed. As an eloquent speaker, Mr. Mulkey has few equals In South ern Oregon, und the address be gave Hundny will long be remembered. "As the role of the departed dead was called, we peered into the un fathomable darkness and saw noth ing." said the speaker. "We harkened Into the Intermin able silence, and there came no voice, but across the chasm from shore to shore there swings the cable of ho|»e, and along It we aeud our whispered message* of love, and do await an answer to our prayer. "The permancy of that fraternity upon which Elkdom la founded is beat shown In thia beautiful custom and ceremony of commemoration. While bronze and marble may give way un der the effacing Angers of time, the memory of the departed la kept for ever preserved upon the fleshly tab lets of love and memory by the great est self-perpetuating body of Elka so well begun on a love mission that shall not end. "It Is a sad reflection that the life of the average man Is not sung In poetry nor recorded In history That the work of the average life soon loses semblance. That usually the memory of the departed does not out live the last faint tones of the bell that knells his departure. It Is trus that loved ones surviving may cherish the Agure and voice of the departed, but they, too, must go to join tjie 'mysterious caravan.’ A marble slab may retain Into the next generation the name, birth and death of the de parted, and a slight inscription. But the traveler of a future generation may stand by a tottering, faded tomb stone. half hidden by the wild brier, without a single call upon his sym pathy. But. my brothers, as the • • • "the yenrs come nnd go On the river’s breast, With It’s ebb and flow,” loving hearts recall nt each recurring memorial day the sweet memory of our departed brothers, on. on, ’till the Inst syllable of recorded time.* ’ Why do I give our order such length of years? Because It springs from the cravings of the human heart for a domain of brotherhood.
