Il D. Townsend, s|s*cial attorney in Qie D>* partinent of Justice, is at Potlland lor the purpose of Inangtiraliiig the legal proceedings. The lands involves! are the California A Oregon grant land* and arc eatimatixl to be worth about »5ll,(*h>.- (MIO, aa moat id the tell ia heavily tilli te red. The lends were granted years ago. One condition was that they should lie sold to actual settlers at the rata of »2.50 an acre. The assertion is made that the railroads have not lived upto the terms of the grant, and incon sequence the grant should Is* revoked. These lands are now worth (ar in exceaa of »2 50 per si re and the Southern' Pacific la alow to let go <<( the tract, and actual settlers on the land are unable to get titles to the claims llist they have applied for. The matter « ns brought to the attention of flu* Government but lie lore the suit could l<e instituted it was necessary to have a resolution passed by Congress. This requited mncli red tape and considerable eng.....ering on the part of the Government, (or the railroad people Were not asleep at the switch. Now that theCongiessi null end of the situation Ims been iliapoaed of, the Gov- erniuent is ready bi proetred with the suit. A large number Klamath Falla people are interested in this tract, as they paid for locations ii|sm these lands. It has been elated that only actual settlers upon the lauds would ls< given n prefer ence right, but there are still many who are not convinced that they w ill lai given no prior right because of having merely applied for the lands. There are no known cases in thia county where par ties are actually residing upon the grant lands. However, milch inteieal is being taken in the government suit, for il it wins it will open up a large area of hind for aettlement a« well as give back tn the Government a large tract of timber land.
