Tbia percentage was 19.7, almost •0. Out of 1,203 total enlistments 238 Were killed in battle. If the caaualty toootda of tbe war department could be •osepted ns correct, the Seventh Wiscon- ata wpuld stand nt lhe head of tbe list of fegiments which lost the most men killed in battle by actual count. In feinting his Buluum to march forward iu MoPber- sou's woods at the aall of the brave Reynohta Meredith placed the Meoond and Seventh "'tsreinsiu ou the left. One volley of Hill's rueu cut dowu SO per cent of the Second regiment. In les« tliuu half an hour it lost 116 killed out ut SOO men enguged. The Seventh then cloeed the gaps and obeckod the unward march of the victorious enemy. In the Seventh, after lighting ail day. lU the west slope of Summary ridge to the foot of Cemetery hill, the loss .indiuut- ed to 1 78 killed, wonnded aud missing. Regimental formations were ofleu bro ken and the shattered ranks of several oommauda united iu order to presuut a bold front. At cue time a strauge regi ment came flying back from the enemy's attack, through the liue of battle of the Iron brigade. Hoping to rally the pauio stricken men, Captain Richardson of the Seven tli rushed among them and seized their flag. Waving it aud going forward, he appealed to the fugitives to face the other way. But it was usvleaa. The pauic was beyond coutroL Captain Richardson stood alone, a couspicnona target, until the last of the stampeded soldiers abandoned the ground, then boro the colors, still flauunng defiance to the enemy, into the ranks of his own iron hearted company, well named the "Lodi guards. ” Battletiug episodes were unmorona that day ou Summary Ridge, boon after Captain Richardson saved the strange stand of colors. Sergeant Richards— two letters would have made him a namesake of the first hero of the ''Mar quette sharpshooters'*—saw the colors of a strange regiment go dowu in battle midway between the Uniou hues aud the The reoorda of tbe different states hav* been revised siDoe the war, and •oldlers reported “missing” in Wasb- in*t<x> have been fonnd to belong prop- •vly among the "killed in action.” Th« Mat of "Three Hundred Fighting Regi« asoBts” was prep«*red by Colonel Wil* liam F. Fox after an examination of both national and state rolls. The figures <d the latter were adopted in caeen where they showed the greater losses in killed. According to the state records, the five regiments at the bead of the UM ar«: KBW er »liod of w and*. Fifth Michigan........................ Twentieth Mafwnchusetts. . In the national list the Seventh Wie- «onain stands first and in the state list third on the roll of honor. Iu percent age of loaees it stands fifth on the list, having lost 381 killed out of 1,6 >'6 <n- relled. If th« percentage be based upon the number of mtn who joined the col ors, the percentage is the highest oFalL There were 256 conscripts «»tigned to the Seventh, very few of whom reported for duty in the field. After deducting them the percentage of killed iu bat tle in the Seventh rises above that of the banner regiment and stands at 2C. 5, or one in every five men. Slaughter pens were far too common tw the war where the victims bad no <$ance to fight back. But the Seventh W1acon»in was not decimated in that Way. It lost mru killed in 17 battles, and in 10 of the 17 where it suffered gMM punishment fought winning fights, at leaat for the time being. It gained What it Wes after when the men were klUed. aud that counts for good work in war. I will illustrate this story of Tegi mental heroics by a few examples of personal heroism. The Seventh was organized in August, 1861. Each of the ten companies adopt ed a synonym. There weie the “Co- lumbia County oaclcts,” "Platteville guards,” “Stoughton guards,” "Mar- qeetteCounty sharpahesrters,” "Lnmas- ier Union guards,” “Grand Rapids Un ion guard«," “Badger btate guards,” 'Tiorthwratern tigers.” "Badger rifle»" and “Lodignards. ” It was a good band to join the “Iron Brigade of the West.’’ With that splendid phalanx it received Its baptism of Are at Second Bull Run, Aug. 38, 1863. Ii> the beat of the en gagement there, when the combatants were not more than 75 yards apart, the Seventh changed front under fit' in or der to march to the relief of its compan ion regiment, the Second Wisconsin. (There were thfee Wisconsin regiments In the Iron brigade—tho Second, Sixth and Seventh.) All the field officers of the Seventh were wounded at Second Bull Run, but Ueutenant Colonel Hamilton stock by the oolors until the battle was over, then fainted from loss of blood. At South Mountain, Md., on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14, 1863, the regiment, with the Nineteenth Indiana, led tlie attack on the gorge tn Turner’s gap. Tbe battle lasted far into the night, aud about 9 o'clock tbe WiscqpsiD and Indiana sol diers bad used up all their cartridges. Word of this in some way reached the ears of the Confederates, and they pre pared to attack tne Iron brigade and re cover the gorge. General Gibbon ordered tbe men to bold their ground at tbe point of the bayonet. In the Seventh, Captain Callis, who commanded in the absence of tbe wounded leaders—it was only 14 days after the battle at Bull Run sent out some men to gather car tridges from the dead, and when the boxes had been refilled ordered the regi ment to lie down and resume tire for close work. Soon afterward the Confed erates moved up in tlie darkness. Cap tain Callis called the Seventh into liue and led it forward 20 paces on a bayonet charge. One volley was tired, aud the enemy's line disappeared. South Mountain is classed ns a skir mish, but the Seventh Wisconsin lost 136 men killed aud wounded on that field. Sergeant Jefferson Coates was one of the wounded. He suffered the loss of an eye. At Gettysburg, a year later, Coates lost his other eye, aud for gal lantry displayed on that field was lire- Vetted captain aud awarded a medal of honor. From South Mountain to Gettysburg . The bearer had fallen and did not rise again. Richards started fur the spot determined to save tlie flag, but when he reached th« place which he had marked with his eye, he could find nei ther colors nor prostrate bearer. The ground was verv rough and uneven, so be could easily have missed the mark, or the wounded guardian of the flag may have crawled away to shelter. In look ing the ground over, Richards saw two Confederates hugging the earth for safe ty. He ordered them to get up and march before him to the line« of the Seventh. Iu the annals of Richards’ company, E, from Marquette county I find record ed cue of those sad yet Pinching trag edies which are left out ef the great war histories. One of the noblest of lhe Mar quette boys was Sergeant Robert W. Hubbard. His biographer says of him : "A young man esteemed aud respected by all who knew him. ” We all know what that signifies when applied to a volunteer soldier. Young Hubbard was «but through the body and lived just long enough to whimper a dying message into the ear of a comrade. It was this: “Tell my mother that I died like her boy.” The Seventh fought in the Wilderness with Hancock's corps on the Brock road, and with that corps iu three sep arate halt les on the field of Spotteyl- viuna In its last fight of 1864 the tegi- ment numbered only 156 muskets.
