AGE TWELVE TrTB KTCW3 ANT THE HFRAT.TV KT.AMATH FAUJ. ORKGOV Awards Given to Many Youngsters At Annual "Days" During fha past two weeks, 4-H Achievement days have been held in every community In the county where 4-H club work is carried. In some communities they have been combined with the regular all-school Achieve ment day; on other occasions 4-H achievement awards have been presented during the (trad uation program, or as a strictly 4-H Achievement day. Achievement day is looked forward to and planned as a def inite part of the yearly club pro gram by 4-H members and lead era. The idea of Achievement days is as old as 4-H club work itself, dating back to 1914. when the Smith-Lever act, creating 4-H club work, was passed by congress. Achievement days are staged for the purpose of giving public recognition to achievement in leadership and in 4-H club prog' resa. Voluntary local leaders, who have successfully completed their first year of 4-H club lead ership, are presented with first year leadership pins in recogni tion of their voluntary commun ity services. Pins are presented to boys and girls who have com pleted their first year ot -a club work. These pins are pre sented in behalf of the state de partment of education as the de partment s contribution xowaros encouraging boys and girls in this worthwhile educational pro gram. Third and fifth year pins are presented to those boys and girls who have successfully com pleted three and five years, re spectively, in 4-H club work. These pins are presented by the First National bank of Portland through their Klamath Falls and Merrill branches, and have been presented this year by George Mclntyre of the Klamath Falls branch and Don Say of the Mer rill branch. Recognition of the successful completion of other successive years of club work Is through the presentation of achievement certificates. Three members in the county have completed their ninth year of club work. They are Ray Jones of Altamont, Zel la Sullivan of Olene, and Bill Waldrip of Merrill. Boys and girls may start their club work at nine years of age and carry projects until they are 21, thus the highest achieve ment award available to club members Is for 10 years of con secutive progress. Eight year certificates were presented to the following: Mar garet Lewis of Altamont, and Nona Masten, ris Fleming, Francis Sullivan and Barbara LaPrarie of Henley. Another feature of the 4-H Achievement day is the presen tation of 4-H summer school and summer camp awards. These scholarships having been won by club members as premiums on their exhibits are thus presented in recognition of perfection and quality of workmanship in then chosen field. It was five years ago that the first summer school and summer camp scholarships were awarded as premiums at the fairs in place of the former small cash award system which had been followed for many years. These scholarships afford the winners an educational trip to one of these events, and thus add to the value of the 4-H spring fair. Fifty-five scholarships to the 4-H summer school, 69 to sum mer camp, and 100 one-half scholarships to summer camp were presented to club members at Achievement day this spring, some of which were presented at very Achievement day pro gram. These scholarships are also presented at Achievement day by organizations such as granges, PTA's, local club schol arships and organizations such as Sears, Roebuck and company, who this year are furnishing 10 scholarships to summer school including board, room, tuition and railroad fare. The follow ing Is a list of achievement awards presented to club mem bers at Achievement days throughout the county this year, starting with the first vear: FIRST YEAR PINS Algoma Earl Lloyd, Floyd Welker, Milton Lotches, Eert Keller, Lloyd Weger, Bob Burgess.
