April 18 CD The retreat of the stock market since the opening of the Balkan fighting was extended today on an Irregular front, dropping a number of Important shares to the lowest prices seen this year. - Down fractions to more than a point most of the day were Douglas Aircraft, Du Pont, East man, General Electric, Union Carbide, Sears Roebuck, West Inghouse and J. I. Case. Notable among gainers were Crucible Steel, United States Steel. Atlantic Coast Line, West ern Union, Santa Fe. Phelps Dodge and Glenn Martin. Transactions approximated 500,000 shares. Late buying that helped the market's recovery was attributed to previous short sellers and milling interests, possibly re flecting some flour sales to gov ernment agencies. Selling was induced by food grain belt rains, uncertainty about the wheat loan program and war news. Wheat closed 1c lower to 1c higher compared with yester day's finish. "TDM SAWYER" SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT What promises to be top notch entertainment is scheduled for Friday evening. April 18, when the Altamont Junior high school presents, "Tom Sawyer," an operetta in three acts, to which the public is invited. Act one takes place outside Tom's house, the second act, divided into three scenes, in the graveyard at midnight of the same day, on a pirate island a few days later, and in a big cave, a few days later. The third act also takes place outside Tom's house. Is one of eight dealer executives west of the Rocky mountains who were awarded trips to the Pontiac factory, ac- 1 ' cording to word received here from E. W. Norman, zone mana ger. Otto will leave Klamath Falls Thursday as guest of the Pontiac division of General Motors, for an outstanding performance in new car sales. The Earl Smith company placed first in percentage of new car quotas for a 60-day period in competition with Port-' land, Seattle and intermediate city dealers in Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho. The leading new car salesmanagcr and used car salesmanager in the zone were awarded the trips. It was also learned that Hiram Walker, used car manager for the Earl Smith dealership in Sacramento, won first place in the contest in the San Francisco zone. The men will attend meetings conducted by D. U. Bathrick, general salesmanager for Pon tiac, on April 21 and 22. E Oil LEAVE William George Wilkins, 17. 1114 North Seventh street, who enlisted at the local navy re cruiting station here February 13, is home on leave from the U. S. naval training station in San Diego where he has Just completed his rccnit training and recently passed 'he examina tion to enter the aviation radio school. According to Wilkins the course will cover a period of four months of special instruc tions at the radio school in North Island, San Diego. Wil kins is a former Khmath Union high school student F. J. McDonald, chief gunners mate and local navy recruiting officer, issued a n appeal for recruits again Tuesday especi ally directed to men graduating from high school this spring. McDonald stressed the fact that more than 50 per cent of the men in the service of the United States navy today are special ists, trained craftsmen receiv ing from $60 to $157 a month plus board and lodging. That the navy offers excellent oppor tunity for advancement was stated by McDonald who stated any interested men should con tact him at the recruiting of fices in the postoffice building. A wage Increase of approxi mately 50 cents a day for trans fer company pickup and de livery men in Klamath Falls was announced Tuesday by Earl K. Edsall of the AFL teamsters union who at the same time re vealed that negotiations were underway for a nay boost aver aging 50 cents for tiuck drivers and warehousemen handling local grocery products.
